It wasn’t a work of art, but the Winnipeg Jets come home 3-1-0 after a four game road trip to start the season. No one would have complained with a 0.500 record with the Jets facing two back-to-back situations.
Let’s break down the Jets 4-1win over the New York Rangers.
The Rangers opened up the scoring after an missed drop pass for Tyler Myers ended up with a 3-on-1 situation the other way. Not long after though Nikolaj Ehlers picked up his first career NHL goal off a sweet shot, bar and down.
The second period was full of anxiety, with six special team situations, five of which were penalty kills for the Jets. However, Michael Hutchinson was able to keep the team in play and a short handed goal by Bryan Little pulled the Jets ahead.
Little picked up a power play marker for his second of the game and season for the insurance goal. The Rangers pulled Lundqvist with less than 3 minutes to go, and Mark Stuart scored his first of the season from Adam Lowry pulling the puck back after some effective forechecking from Ehelrs.
THREE KEYS
Hutch is Clutch: The Jets should not expect to receive the goaltending they have over the past four games, but great goaltending is what they got. Hutchinson stopped 31-32 shots at even strength and all nine for other situations, giving him a 0.976 save percentage for the game.
Calder Nik: Electric Ehlers. Dashing Dane. Doesn’t matter what you call him, but what you can call him is an excellent rookie. The speedy young forward has been generating a tonne of chances, and is especially dangerous on the rush. Ehlers picked up his first goal of the season and expect many more if he continues to generate the chances he has, as he currently leads the NHL in WAR-on-Ice’s scoring chances.
Not So Burmi: To say Alexander Burmistrov had a rough game would be an understatement. Burmistrov was able to create a bunch of chances, although without any finish. On top of that, the usually very elite defensive forward put up the Jets worst even strength shot metric numbers.
