Jets Nation Recap: Jaws 3. The Trilogy No One Wanted

If you were a neutral watching this game, you would have enjoyed it. But this is a Jets site and we haven’t had much enjoyment this season. For the third and final time this season, the San Jose Sharks defeated the Winnipeg Jets. Despite a terrific game from Josh Morrissey, the Jets fell 3-2 to the Sharks in a competitive, well-played game.

Game Notes:

It was an even game throughout as both teams were physical and gave no quarter. Joe Pavelski opened the scoring midway through the first period but Morrissey equalized two minutes later as his screen shot eluded Aaron Dell.
We mentioned Morrissey off the top but his play deserves more recognition. The former Prince Albert Raider was the best Jet tonight, using his smarts and puck moving ability to control the pace when he was on the ice. In 20 minutes of ice time, Morrissey was a 60.98% CF which is mind boggling! He and Jacob Trouba are the future of the Jets blueline and the future starts now.
The Jets power play let them down yet again. Mikkel Boedker’s shorthanded tally in the third period was the proverbial TSN turning point. Boedker intercepted a bad Patrik Laine pass, broke in alone and found an opening over Connor Hellebuyck’s shoulder. You could feel the air being let out of the building after that one.
Congratulations to Joe Thornton for recording his 1000th assist on Pavelski’s empty netter. Jumbo Joe has enjoyed a fabulous career and will be enshrined into the Hockey Hall of Fame when he hangs up his skates. 1000 assists is indeed a tremendous accomplishment.
I normally don’t like harping on the officials but it wasn’t the best tonight. Both teams were victims of some soft calls as well as getting away with obvious infractions. Shane Hnidy mentioned that linesman Mark Shewchyk had many do-overs in terms of faceoffs. It seemed that Shewchyk wanted to be part of the story tonight. That I mentioned him meant sadly, he was.
Aaron Dell likes playing at the MTS Centre. The Airdrie, Alberta native was brilliant between the pipes for the Sharks, stopping 31 out of 33 shots for a .939 save percentage. It was Dell’s second win in our fair city this season. Dell got the W back on January 24, when the Sharks edged the Jets 4-3.
Chris Thorburn got into a fight again. Why? I don’t know. He better not be on the Jets next season.
