Jets fall to Sharks 5-2: Road trip ends in embarrassing fashion

Too little too late.
As always, the final score doesn’t reflect how far apart the Jets are from their opponents. The final score read 5-2, but the third period was irrelevant, as the Jets had already looked disheveled and out of sync. This afternoons loss wraps up a forgettable three game road trip that only accumulated a single point to show for.
The clock is ticking and the Jets playoff chances are dwindling and each disappointing performance piles up to reduce the teams playoff chances.
Let’s break down todays matinee.

Game notes

  • The game started in classic Jets-fashion. A quick start with chances right off the bat. Good energy and pressure and overall, the Jets were controlling the pace to start this one out. But it didn’t last long, not long at all.
  • The Jets quickly lost a handle on the game and the flood gates opened. Defensive breakdowns occurred left and right and the Jets were simply out played and out worked.
  • It’s widely apparent that Michael Hutchinson is no longer an NHL goalie. He was beat on numerous 1 on 1 attempts and it seems his reflexes simply can’t handle the speed of NHL shots.
  • Don’t be surprised if Ondrej Pavelec is recalled within the next 24 hours. Whether you agree with it or not, theres a big possibility we see Pavelec don the Jets uniform a couple more times this season.
  • While the goaltending has been bad, the team as a unit has been performing beyond poorly. The Jets gave up on the Sharks fourth goal and hung their struggling goalie out to dry. It’s hard for the Jets goaltenders to regain their confidence when the team in front of them provides a sluggish effort when the goals start piling up.
  • One person that rarely hangs their goaltender out to dry is Jacob Trouba. Trouba made two goal-preventing plays in the blue paint as he swatted out many loose pucks away from Michael Hutchinson. His game has elevated substantially and he’s currently the Jets best defenseman, without a doubt.
  • Mark Stuarts erratic pinch on the Sharks second goal basically sums up his career. Unbenoucned to Mark Stuart at times, theres actually a hockey game going on. Meaning that if there’s someone that’s an easy target to body check, it’s important to pick your spots and not go for the hit if there’s players behind you that are gaining ground on your zone. That’s a costly mistake and the start to the Jets downfall today.
  • The Jets second period may have been the worst period I’ve ever watched them play. The entire game was controlled by the Sharks. Operating their offensive schemes like a power play, the Sharks had the Jets pinned in their own zone while exhausting them with their fierce offensive attack.
