October 11th was opening night for the Winnipeg Jets and Calgary Flames. The two western Canadian  teams are being doubted by most of the mainstream sports media. some even wonder if either team can make the playoffs or make any noise in past the first round of the playoffs. however the Flames came out on top in the first game of the seaon one, winning by a score of 5-3.
A few players made their Jets debut last night such as Alex Iafallo, Rasmus Kupari and Gabriel Vilardi. All came over in the Pierre-Luc Dubois trade that took place in the summer. Vilardi and Iafallo looked dangerous on that first power play unit but they got nothing past Markstrom as the power play went 0/4 last night.
The top line contributed a lot last night. Mark Scheifele, who is fresh off a 7-year extension, scored a huge game tying goal late in the third period. Kyle Connor opened the scoring, as he has now scored in six straight season-opening games which ties a National Hockey League record. Alex Iaffalo jumped in on the scoresheet with an impressive deflection goal to tie the game at two halfway through the second period.

Head coach Rick Bowness had high praises for his team after the effort they gave.  If this is what we are going to be getting from these guys each night. The trade between the Los Angeles Kings and Jets is looking better and better each day for the Kevin Cheveldayoff and the Jets.
Someone who kinda looked off was Connor Hellebuyck who just signed a 7-year extension with the Jets. Recorded a 0.810 save percentage and a 4.12 goals against average. Calgary had 21 shots, Hellebuyck stopped 17. But most of the goals you can’t really blame him for as they were defensive mistakes that converted into high danger scoring chances.
The Jets head back to Winnipeg where they will prepare to take on former head coach Paul Maurice and the Florida Panthers on Saturday for their home opener at Canada Life Centre. That game will be on TSN3 and you can listen in on CJOB and starts at 3 PM.
