The Winnipeg Jets and defenseman Josh Morrissey have come to an agreement on a contract extension. As first reported by TSN’s Darren Dreger on Thursday morning and confirmed by the Jets minutes later the new contract extension is for eight years starting next season and has an Average Annual Value of $6.25 million.
Morrissey was The Jets first round pick (13th overall) in the 2013 NHL Draft and after playing out his full junior career with the Prince Albert Raiders and Kelowna Rockets of the WHL, joined the Manitoba Moose in the 2015-16 season where he picked up three goals and 22 points in 57 games played.
The Calgary, Alberta native then joined the Jets for the 2016-17 season and has since played in 223 career games, scoring 19 goals, 58 assists and 78 points. Morrissey had signed a two year bridge deal for $3.150 million per year right before training camp last year, and now this new extension will see him as a member of the Jets until 2027-28 season.
Last season, Morrissey missed a chunk of games due to injury and was overall limited to 69 games played, but he posted a new career high in both points (31) and TOI (22:24 per game) and helped anchor the number one pairing alongside Jacob Trouba. While Morrissey is normally regarded as a defensive defensemen, his offensive ability is what stood out this season.
