Jets defeat Sens 3-2

Another two points, another glimpse of hope.
With a regulation win against the Senators, the Jets find themselves one point behind the Calgary Flames for a wild card spot. Despite having games in hand on a handful of teams in the hunt, the Jets are still treading water.
Here’s everything you need to know about today’s matinee.
  • In the dying seconds of the third, the Senators made a final push to send the game to OT. They came close, a matter of inches and video review quality decided their fate. With four seconds remaining, it appeared Jean-Gabriel Pageau had squeaked the puck past Connor Hellebuyck, but the replay deemed there was not conclusive evidence that the puck had crossed the line.
  • Jacob Trouba should be expecting a phone call from NHL Player Safety within the next 24 hours. Trouba laid out Senators forward Mark Stone with a blatant elbow to the head. Stone did not return to the game.
  • You know who’s hot? Mathieu Perreault. Perreualt currently has four points in his last three games, along with 14 hits in that span.
  • Patrik Laine recorded two assists today and is currently on pace for 70 points. The Jets/Thrashers franchise record for most points in a rookie season is Danny Heatley’s 67 points in 2001-2012.
  • I thought Connor Hellebuyck had a solid outing, but his rebound control is fairly worrisome. That stuff will be adjusted over time, but several grade-A chances were given up due to rebounds. Pavelec’s injury is somewhat of a blessing in disguise for Hellebuyck who gets to step back into the starting goaltender spot and regain his confidence in the process.
  • Ben Chiarot played 24:04 minutes today and it was rather frustrating to watch. Chiarot at times is a pylon in the defensive zone and his defensive awareness is rather baffling at times.
  • But Josh Morrissey on the other hand, he’s been very impressing. Morrissey has arguably been the Jets most consistent defenceman since the start of the year.
