Winnipeg Jets (1.0) legend and current Barrie Colts head coach Dale Hawerchuk recently chatted with Luke Fox of Sportsnet.ca to talk about his support of this past weekend’s Soctiabank Pro-Am charity hockey tournament for Alzheimer’s in support of Baycrest, and of course about other various topics covering the hockey world.
One such topic that came up was of course the past season the Winnipeg Jets (2.0) had. Hawerchuk’s presence as an ambassador of sorts for the team has grown quite a bit over the last year as the club has embraced Winnipeg’s hockey history more openly.
While there may have been some hope that the embrace of the past would have come along side an arrival of the team’s bright future, it didn’t quite turn out that way. Instead, it was the Toronto Maple Leafs – a team that is becoming increasingly linked to the Jets due to the club’s similar “rebuilds” over the past couple of seasons – that took a step forward into playoff qualifying.
I like ’em. They had a year when it just didn’t happen. I always say to people, “You gotta find your mojo and run with it.” Toronto! They had a great year. Got their mojo and ran with it. And when you have it, you have to make hay. It’s harvest time. Bring it in. Because you never know what’s going to happen next year. You get into injuries, guys have off years, goaltending issues. So, to me, Toronto and Winnipeg were on opposite ends of the spectrum. One found their mojo, the other didn’t.
Dale goes on to talk about various topics such as just how much faster and in turn more dangerous the game has become, Sidney Crosby’s latest concussion issue, the Jets battles with the Oilers back in the 80’s and his relationship with mark Scheifele. The entire interview can be found over at Sportsnet.ca
