Game 9 vs Nashville: Scoring Chances

If you believe in the merit of scoring chances as an indicator of a flow of the game, then the goals Pavelec let in really killed this team.

Observations
The Jets were actually out chancing Nashville 7-4 up until their second goal went in. I had felt that the Jets were playing a solid game, and had a good chance of fighting back and winning the game. Following that goal, Nashville managed to go 6-2 on the scoring chance count, and completely took over a deflated Jets team.
On three chances, the Jets penalty kill gave up no chances (the one chance against was the goal Nashville scored short-handed). The Jets have been excellent short handed as of late, a trend they need to keep up if they want to survive in the West at all.
Olli Jokinen and Devin Setoguchi once again had solid games. Jokinen has been solid all year long, and this game was no different. He has played himself back up onto the second line, and has already shown good chemistry with Setoguchi. I wouldn’t completely hate seeing the two of them paired with Andrew Ladd, allowing Bryan Little to play with the much faster Evander Kane.
Mark Scheifele had another tough game. He hasn’t exactly been able to take advantage of playing in easier situations, and I find myself once again thinking he probably should have started the year in the AHL. Now all we can do is hope he learns in the world’s hardest hockey league.
I thought Adam Pardy played pretty well in his first game this season. If he can maintain at least a decent level of play, he would provide some much needed depth for the Jets.
It’s funny how no defensive pairing was single handedly picked apart on the same night Mark Stuart wasn’t in the lineup.
Overall, this game ended up quite evenly played. The Jets controlled the first half, and Nashville played an excellent shut down game once they got a lead. If they want to be successful against the Preds in the future, they need goaltending that won’t crumble under the few chances they generate.
Moving Forward
The Jets’ much improved penalty kill will be in tough tonight against a lethal Washington squad. The Caps are off to another slow start and the West has completely dominated the East thus far this season. This should be a good matchup for the Jets right now, but we all remember that last time the Caps came into Winnipeg after struggling right?
