A very…Nashville-ish game on Sunday night resulted in another disappointing Jets loss, highlighted by a woeful performance from the most disappointing Jet of all.

As a whole, I thought the Jets did a decent job at getting the puck into the Preds zone. They unfortunately weren’t able to generate very much once they got in there, but they were able to get there.

Evander Kane was Evander Kane. He generated a bundle of shots, and was carrying the puck in more than not. It was the same old story here.

It’s been nice to see Blake Wheeler actually carrying the puck into the offensive zone again. The LLW line was put together again against Nashville, but as you can see, none of the three were able to generate anything. Past results will say the three of them will get it together, but I’m not sure how much longer this team can sit and wait for that to happen. A combined total of three shots from their entries just are not enough for what it supposed to be a top line in the NHL.

Olli Jokinen was quite effective once again. He may not have had a huge number of entries, but he controlled more than he didn’t and was able to generate shots when he did. His success, combined with Scheifele’s struggles (again), resulted in Olli being promoted up to the second line part way through the game. Although I don’t think this is great for Scheifele’s development, the team needs more production from the second line. Hopefully some balance can be found soon.

With the team struggling offensively, we saw both Michael Frolik and Dustin Byfuglien trying to help create something. Frolik had limited success, but Big Buff was able to generate a fair amount of offense.

I thought Pavelec really let his team down in this game.  

I’m not sure what Pavelec saw here. A goalie’s job is to take the shooter on any two-on-one, and the pass is to be left to the defenseman. Enstrom does a good job in taking away the pass, meaning Pavelec should feel comfortable with focusing on Nystrom as he comes down the wing. As well, Nystrom is coming down at a terrible angle. Despite this, Pavelec is too close to his nearside post. This leaves the far side of the net available, and Nystrom takes advantage, beating Pav clean.

Oh boy Pavelec. Does this need much explanation? Instead of going the safe route behind him, or the easy route of passing to the defenseman in front of him, Pav tries to clear the puck himself and well… It’s a tough break to hit Bogosian like that, but the turnover itself and Pav being out of position can’t be blamed on anyone else.

This one is a little more controversial. The Jets get out-numbered down low as the power play ends, and this leaves Cullen open at the side of the net. My problem with this goal is honestly Pavelec’s effort and save attempt. It’s a very weak push to get across his crease, followed up by a two-pad stack straight out of the ‘80’s that just doesn’t work. If he would have made the save, it would have been a highlight-reel save, but he didn’t so here we are. Or, he could have just played the angle and made a simple save.

Old rivals from Washington return to play the Jets in a few hours from now at the MTS Centre. Here are a few things to watch for against Ovechkin and Co:

Where will Jokinen play? He has definitely earned another chance on the second line thus far, but putting him there isn’t exactly using Scheifele as he should be. It’ll be interesting to see what Claude does.

Will Stuart be healthy? Who will he replace? Not that I think Mark Stuart should be an automatic draw if he is healthy enough to play, but Claude Noel seems to think he is. I thought Adam Pardy played well enough to warrant himself another game, so I’m not exactly sure as to who will be the odd man out.

The penalty kill! I’ve mentioned it constantly and it’s been great as of late. If I stop now and it falls apart, I’ll feel like a fool.

A huge opportunity Kevin Cheveldayoff passed on this summer returns to Winnipeg tonight. Mikhail Grabovski was freely available on waivers following his buyout from the Toronto Maple Leafs, and he ultimately signed in Washington. Here’s hoping he doesn’t make the Jets pay too much.
