Game 55 vs Nashville: Scoring Chances and Observations

Following a rather rough second period, the Jets showed once again that they are now capable of turning it on in the third to make any game interesting. Unfortunately, on Tuesday night it simply wasn’t enough to overcome some questionable goaltending throughout the night.

Observations
This wasn’t exactly a game for the offensive record books. There was a lot of board play, wearing down of opponents, and limiting defensive lapses. Yet somehow the game still provided a total of seven goals, mostly as a result of some iffy goaltending and weird bounces.
Mark Scheifele and Blake Wheeler really seem to be putting together something magical. They were absolutely dominant together on more than one occasion against Nashville. If almost anyone other than Chris Thorburn was with them, I can almost guarantee things would have resulted in more opportunities or goals. Scheifele has played lights out as of late. He’s doing a solid job of silencing a lot of his critics in his new role.
The line of Andrew Ladd, Bryan Little, and Michael Frolik continue to grow and impress as a unit. They have regularly been the Jets best possession line lately, and that will eventually result in goals. In the mean time, I’m perfectly happy with them limiting opportunities against. They are pretty good at it.
It comes as no surprise to me that Mark Stuart was the worst Jet overall on the night. He was on the ice for almost every power play chance that Nashville was able to create, made bad mistakes on at least two of their goals, and provides little offense to make up for it. The fact that he was voted by Jets fans as the “MVP” for January is a pathetic joke. We are better than that folks. Much better.
The Jokinen line has really become stagnant lately. They rely far too heavily on a dump and chase mentality, and it has limited their offensive pressure. I’m still pushing for Byfuglien to move back to the blue line, but I don’t think it will even be considered before Kane comes back to the lineup.
Final Thought
The Canucks have really struggled lately. If the Jets want to show that they are ready to take a big step towards change, they will pounce all over a Canucks team with little to no confidence on Friday night.
