Game 49 at Calgary: Pavelec Performance and Neutral Zone Play

Trouba making people look silly.
In his first game following the opportunity to take the Jets through a couple practices, we saw something out of the Jets with Paul Maurice that we haven’t seen too often lately. It was only a single game, but it was a sign of hope. Hopefully more is on the way.

Observations

  • That’s right folks. The Jets were actually right along the 50% controlled entry line on the night. Their efficiency did drop a little bit from what we’ve seen lately in that field, but it was still slightly above average. I’m really hoping this is a direct result of Paul Maurice being behind the bench, but only time will truly tell.
  • Bryan Little led the way for the Jets in the efficiency category, as it looks like he is starting to get familiar with having Michael Frolik playing with him and Ladd. Paul Maurice has put that grouping together with the mindset of having a strong possession “shut down” line, so having them able to put the puck in the net will provide an added bonus.
  • Scheifele, Wheeler and Thorburn really struggled to get anything going through the neutral zone against the Flames. Scheifele didn’t even register an entry, likely due to the high number that Thorburn was dumping in. It was an off game, but I am still excited for the thought of Wheeler and Schief playing with Evander Kane upon his return.
  • Olli Jokinen has excelled since being put with Setoguchi and Byfuglien. He’s very clearly loved having Maurice behind the bench, so hopefully this will continue. If not for the success of the team immediately, then for the increase in his trade value at the deadline in a month and a half.

Pavelec Performance

Pavelec had a decent game against the Flames, but I had a couple issues with the usual stuff. He got beat clean blocker side again due to being slightly off on his positioning, and was almost caught on more than one occasion following poor over-commitments.

Quick Explanations

Pav probably should have had this goal. Giordano ended up skating himself into a pretty poor shooting position, but Pavelec put himself in a poor position to make the save. Thus, he got beat far side by a nicely placed shot.
Faceoff loss, deflection in front, goal. My only problem? No five hole goal is a good goal to give up.

Final Thought

Grant Clitsome underwent season ending back surgery this week. He may not have been playing too well when we got hurt, but you never want to hear that about a player. Best wishes to Grant from all of us at Jets Nation. Get well soon!
