The Jets put together a strong effort Sunday night in Colorado that saw them once again win a special teams battle and out-posses an opponent. It was the kind of game that left me, and many other Jets fans, wondering why road performances like these can’t be a more consistent thing.

From midway through the second onward the Jets controlled the tempo and the puck in this game. Surprisingly though, they weren’t able to really generate an abundance of even strength scoring chances with these opportunities. In fact, it wasn’t until the power play they were granted following Gabriel Landeskog’s slashing penalty in the third that the Jets were really able to create any separation in the tally.

I’m not as convinced as the broadcast team was that the Ladd-Little-Wheeler line had such a spectacular game. They made some nice plays and were excellent on the power play, but were on the bad end of the chance-exchange at even strength.

I thought Michael Frolik was the true leader of the KSF line against the Avs. Scheifele of course will continue to get all of the attention, but Frolik consistently makes smart, smooth, educated decisions that have not only prevented that grouping from being exposed defensively, but helps them generate offense as well.

Olli Jokinen has been playing better recently despite his unfortunate line mate. During this game in particular, I thought he led his grouping efficiently and they played pretty well. They weren’t exposed defensively, and were able to create the odd chance. I still don’t think Thorburn should be on that line, but he worked on this night.

For a guy who has been suffering from some sort of nasty bug, Bogosian didn’t seem to stand out in any negative way. That’s a win on what was definitely a tough night for the guy.

The Jets penalty kill has had a couple threatening opportunities over the last couple of games, similar to what they were able to do early in the year. Interesting point to note on those opportunities – James Wright wasn’t on the ice for either of them. I doubt that was a coincidence.

From what I saw, a lot of the Jets chances on the night really were grade-A opportunities. Varlamov was very positionally sound for Colorado throughout this game; otherwise the Jets might have really run away with this contest.

I do not by any means think the Jets are good enough to be a playoff team at this point in time. I think they should be looking to sell at the trade deadline, and try to continue to build on what they are putting together. That being said, they currently sit a mere six points out of a spot. That’s a lot of ground to make up in a league that more often than not gives out three points in a game, but it’s not impossible. They still need to put together a couple long winning streaks for any talks to be taken seriously.
