Game 12 @ Dallas: Pavelec and Entries

Hm. Pavelec kind of made me look silly after my comments last game didn’t he?

Observations

There was a lot of talk from the CBC commentators throughout this game that the Jets were doing a great job at preventing Dallas from gaining the blue line. While this is somewhat true (the Jets actually had a higher zone entry fail percentage), what really should have been talked about was how the Jets were forcing the Stars into a dump and chase method. Especially once they shifted to that weird “1-4” formation, which did allow them to hold up the blue line, but also really killed a lot of their own offense from happening.
It’s time to get a little concerned about Scheifele. Benched in the third period once again, the kid only had one entry, and although it was a pretty successful entry, that’s just not nearly enough from your “second line center”. Especially when you consider how constantly he has been putting up such insignificant numbers.
Kane was sick last night. Literally. Not only did he physically look like it, but he wasn’t his usual self performance wise either. That does speak to how effective he usually is though, because he was far from the worst Jet.
Peluso, Halischuk and Setoguchi were all pleasantly effective once again. They are doing a very good job at making up for Slater’s absence, and Peluso is making a very good case for taking a job away from Chris Thorburn.
Andrew Ladd was all over the place (in a good way) last night. He had plenty of energy, attacked the blue line more often than not and although he had a lower shots/entry value than you would like to see, I have really liked what I’ve seen from the Jet captain as of late.

Pavelec Performance

After a game and some comments that left me furious with Ondrej Pavelec on Thursday, he came back last night with one heck of a game. Although I absolutely hated the goal he let in, down the stretch I thought he was just spectacular. He made numerous tough saves due to great skill and solid positioning, then held tight in the shootout to get the Jets a win. Although I don’t think the Jets will maintain success long term with that passive forecheck, Ondrej made it work Saturday night.

Quick Explanations

Although it occurred in the neutral zone, it’s hard not to look at the turnover as a direct cause for this goal. I didn’t like the attack on Byfuglien following it, but it was a pretty bad move. THAT BEING SAID, Pavelec needs to stop that puck. A weak, broken stick, rolling along the ice “clapper”, that wasn’t tipped with little traffic in front managed to beat Pavelec five hole. I thought the Jets did well to limit that turnover to a shot from the blue line, and that is a situation where you expect your goalie to make a save.

I’m willing to forgive Pavelec on this night though, because this made up for it:

Things To Watch For

Quick turn around for the Jets tonight as they head into Colorado to take on the Avs on back-to-back nights. Here are some things to watch for before/in tonight’s game:

Who’s getting the start? At the time of me writing this, no starting goaltender has been named. Despite his solid game last night, I think Pavelec NEEDS to sit. He’s horrible on the second half of these situations. Montoya should be starting, but who knows.
How long will it take before Scheif is benched? He’s had a horrid stretch lately, and Noel (rather than help him out and think about sending him down) has let him ride the pine. Will it happen again tonight? Will he be a healthy scratch?
How’s Kane? With how sick he looked yesterday, it’s unlikely he managed to heal overnight. This is going to be a hard game for Kaner, so it’ll be interesting to watch how he is used.

Final Thought

The Jets special teams make no sense. They look absolutely deadly on their penalty kill, but are about as useless as it gets on the power play. Please, someone explain this to me.
