The Winnipeg Jets and St. Louis Blues have never met in the NHL playoffs, but it really feels like there is a heated rivalry between the clubs that’s been bubbling under the surface over the last handful of seasons and it feels like we could finally see it now over the next two weeks.
The Jets pretty much dominated the series this past regular season, posting a 3-1-0 record against the Blues, but it’s worth noting that all four games took place before December 7th, 2018. At that point the Blues were 10-13-4 and struggling with goaltending and finding consistency, while the Jets were 17-9-2 and had just come off a red hot November where they couldn’t seemingly lose.
So do these previous games really hold any meaning? Not completely, but it wouldn’t hurt to have a reminder of dominant days the Jets had over the Blues.

Winnipeg – 5
St. Louis – 1

The Jets and Blues opened the season in a really close battle that was tied at 1-1 going into the third period, but the Jets busted things open with four goals in the first 11:05 of the third period to start the season on a winning note.

For about 45 minutes, this was a close, one goal game that for the love of Hellebuyck was still in favor of the jets thanks to the clutch goaltender. The blues rang at least three shots off posts in the game and 5:04 into the third period, while short handed the Jets caught a break as the Blues over-pursued the puck in the offensive end which gave Adam Lowry a breakaway that he didn’t miss to make it a two goal game.

St. Louis – 4
Winnipeg – 5 (OT)

St. Louis got out to a 3-1 lead halfway through the game and the Jets needed a furious comeback effort including a goal by Bryan Little in the last two minutes of the game to tie things up, and then an OT winner by Jacob Trouba to earn a hard fought second victory against the Blues within the first month of the season.

The Winnipeg Jets beat the Blues in a wild 5-4 overtime victory. Although the Jets didn’t play their best, they were able to mount a comeback in the third period. Despite winning the game, there are plenty of concerns for Winnipeg as they were badly out-shot in the first period. The poor play resulted in new line combinations for the start of the third period.

Laine pops off on a Saturday night!
The Jets and Blues were again locked in a tight battle that was 2-2 after the first period, but then Patrik Laine exploded for five goals including a hat trick in the second period that helped put the Jets up by four after forty and they cruised to an 8-4 win.

This game was the Patrik Laine show. From the beginning of the game, Laine was sharp and the second line was creating tons of chances. While the first period was even, the rest of the game wasn’t, as Laine racked up five goals in the game. With such an offensive outburst, the defense didn’t have to be great as the Jets won despite giving up four goals. In the end, it only matters who scores more as the Jets took down the Blues by a score of 8-4. Well, it was actually Laine who took down the Blues by out-scoring them 5-4.

Connor Hellebuyck was outstanding, but Jake Allen was just a little bit better as he posted 27 saves and you could see the Blues playing better and more structured under new coach Craig Berube.
