Any doubts that Connor Hellebuyck was possibly a one-year wonder should be eased after his performance tonight. 41 saves against the Blues and helped keep the Jets heads above water before a three goal outburst in the third period helped left the Jets to a season opening 5-1 win in St. Louis.

TALKING POINTS

  • The Jets defense struggles in the first period especially when it comes to giving up the puck in their own zone. The Tyler Myers / Joe Morrow pairing looks especially off, but Jacob Trouba also had a couple of plays where he didn’t seem to know what he wanted to do with the puck.
  • No goals in the preseason for Patrik Laine? No problem. He doesn’t need much practice to know what to do with the puck when he has time and space from about ten feet away from the net.
  • Paul Maurice and the Jets said they wanted to start taking some pressure off of Connor Hellebuyck from making every single save needed this season… The first period was pretty much the opposite of that.
  • For about 45 minutes, this was a close, one goal game that for the love of Hellebuyck was still in favor of the jets thanks to the clutch goaltender. The blues rang at least three shots off posts in the game and 5:04 into the third period, while short handed the Jets caught a break as the Blues over-pursued the puck in the offensive end which gave Adam Lowry a breakaway that he didn’t miss to make it a two goal game.

  • Three goals in the span of less than two minutes is a great display of two things… One, how much firepower this Jets team really has. Two, how streaky Blues goalie Jake Allen can be. He was pretty good up until that flurry of goals, two of which he definitely should have and could have made stops on.
  • Despite the win, there are still glaring holes the Jets need to work on. The defense allowed way too much in close on Hellebuyck and gave up multiple cross-ice passes. They need to work on zone exits and get back to more of the “one and done” defense they had last season.
  • But that power play is looking dangerous as ever and it’s so much fun to see a team like this just take control of a game like they did in the third even if just for a five minute span.

PLAYERS OF THE GAME

For Winnipeg: Connor Hellebuyck – Incredible game for Hellebuyck who comes about six minutes short of a shutout. 41 saves and a .976 save percentage on the night and regardless of the score, he was the reason the Jets earned a W tonight.
For St. Louis: Vladimir Tarasenko – As always looked super dangerous on the ice and even rang a shot off the post in the first period. No points, but was driving offence for the Blues all night.

NEXT FLIGHT

The Jets season opening road trip continues with a trip south to Texas to take on Jamie Benn, Tyler Seguin and the Dallas Stars. Puck drop is 7 PM CST.
