This game was the Patrik Laine show. From the beginning of the game, Laine was sharp and the second line was creating tons of chances. While the first period was even, the rest of the game wasn’t, as Laine racked up five goals in the game. With such an offensive outburst, the defense didn’t have to be great as the Jets won despite giving up four goals. In the end, it only matters who scores more as the Jets took down the Blues by a score of 8-4. Well, it was actually Laine who took down the Blues by out-scoring them 5-4.

First Period

The first period started slow as both teams were playing it safe in the opening minutes. This was likely due to the fact that both teams played yesterday and had to get their legs under them. Brossoit decided to make things interesting early on as he had multiple turnovers while playing the puck behind the net. While none of these resulted in goals, it set a bad trend for the rest of the period. This trend led to the first goal as St. Louis opened the scoring when Wheeler fanned on a cross ice pass which led to a Perron breakaway.
The lead was short lived after Blake Wheeler tied the game two minutes later on a two on one with Ehlers. Wheeler got the favourable tip off Bouwmeester’s leg to tie the game.
The goals kept coming as Laine scored less than a minute later with a lightning quick release. It was a great effort by the entire line as both Connor and Little made great plays to set up the goal.
The trend of quick goals continued as it was the Blues’ turn to tie the game. The goal was created from another Jets turnover as Morrissey gave the puck away behind the net while trying to make a breakout pass. Tarasenko walked out in front and wired the tying goal into the back of the net.
This concluded a crazy second half of the period where there were four goals in four minutes and eight seconds. Those four goals were equally divided and the game was tied heading into the second period.

Second Period

With a crazy finish to the first period, the game kept going full speed ahead to start the second as Laine scored his second of the night on the powerplay.
After a few penalties back and forth, the Jets kept bringing the pressure as Tanev scored a nice goal by gathering the puck off a blocked shot and out-waiting Johnson before sliding it into the open cage.
Now up by two goals, the Jets continued to press to try and stretch the lead. They may have gotten a bit lucky as the Blues nearly scored as they rung a shot off the post. The puck hit the post so hard that it sprung the Jets on a three on one the other way where Laine scored his third of the night. This marks the third hat trick of the month for Laine.
The rough stuff started to pick up after this goal as the Blues were looking to gain some energy. Myers and Edmundson dropped the gloves and had a spirited tilt.
After that, Laine decided to score another goal as he capitalized off a Blues turnover and sniped his fourth goal of the night from right outside the crease. This marked the end of the game for Johnson, and he likely needed it after allowing four goals from Laine.
As for Laine, he can’t do anything wrong as everything he touches goes into the back of the net. It’s been an outstanding run from the Fin ever since he began playing on a line with Connor and Little.
With the great second period, the Jets headed into the third up 6-2. After giving up a third period lead last game against Minnesota, the message was loud and clear to keep playing hard regardless of the score

Third Period

Why score four goals when you can score five? That’s the question Laine asked as he sniped his FIFTH goal of the night against Jake Allen.
Sometimes everything goes right. This was one of those games for Patrik Laine who had the first five goal game in the NHL since Johan Franzen did it in 2011.
While everything was going right for Laine, not everything was going so well for Brossoit who had another turnover behind the net. This time he wasn’t so lucky as the Blues slammed the puck into the empty net to make it 7-3.
Brossoit’s struggles continued as he let in another goal, this time on the powerplay, as Maroon made a nice move in front of the net.
The Blues gained some life from these goals as they strung together a few good shifts and had some great chances. Brossoit made a few good saves to preserve three goal lead before the Jets scored their eighth of the game in the final minute. It was Lemieux who banged home the goal after a nice rush by the fourth line.
The wild game finally ended with the Jets winning by a score of 8-4 where both teams were scoring with ease.

Talking Points

  • Obviously the biggest talking point is the phenomenal play of Patrik Laine. He’s gaining confidence with every goal and the early season struggles seem so far away. When streaks like this happen, soak it up as long as possible.
  • Have we mentioned Laine yet? He could easily be the only talking point of the game with such an awesome performance.
  • Laine. OK, fine, let’s mention something else.
  • Brossoit struggled throughout the game, especially with playing the puck. He had multiple turnovers and looked shaky when leaving the crease. In the end it didn’t matter, but his performance could have been better.
  • The four game road trip ends with the Jets going 2-2. Their record on the road will have to improve if they want to be considered one of the elite teams going forward.
  • Andrew Copp didn’t play in this game after getting knocked out of yesterdays game against the Wild. Lemieux slotted into the lineup and had a good performance, even notching a goal in the final minute of the game.
