Game four proved to be a classic and by far the most entertaining (aka: stressful) game of the series thus far and after some very tense moments in the first period with a Blues team that dominated in all aspects, the Jets hung in, battled back from being a goal down in the third period and ended up picking the franchise’s first ever overtime playoff victory thanks to the work of the top line.

Welcome to the best of three opening round series.

Almost as expected, the Blues come out dominant to start the game, getting the first eight shots in the game and holding the Jets without a shot for the first 11 minutes of the game. A Blues penalty helps give Winnipeg a little bit of life and a few shots on goal. They were able to settle things down in the second half of the period but it was a period still mostly carried by St. Louis and the Jets were fortunate to escape it tied 0-0.

Back and forth frantic action between the clubs in the second that was all kinds of proof that you don’t need goals for thrilling hockey. Shots are even at 14 each for the period, but even strength scoring chances are tilted a little more in favor of the Jets at 19-13. Both goalies are fantastic at each end.

Winnipeg objectively is the better team in the period, although a late penalty by Perreault doesn’t help matters as St. Louis does get a few last minute chances, but Hellebuyck stands his ground. Speaking of penalties, through two periods the game has only seen one penalty on each side. It’s a fast, physical game but nothing overall dirty or cheap and most infractions feel minor and aren’t called.

Long story short, through 40, you couldn’t have asked for better playoff action between two talented teams.

While not as crazy a pace as the second period, the third period still saw plenty of action and finally some goals as the Blues started off scoring with a power play goal after Mathieu Perreault took a penalty just before the end of the second period. Vladimir Tarasenko netted his second power play goal in as many games with that wicked wrist shot that Hellebuyck had no chance stopping to give the Blues a very early 1-0 lead.

After that goal however, the game was dominated by the Jets in almost every way, with them having a 15-7 lead in shots in the period and NaturalStatTrick.com crediting the Jets with a 7-0 edge in high danger scoring chances.

It was starting to look yet again like Jordan Binnington was going to keep the door shut, but a near perfect tip play finished off by Mark Scheifele gets the game even at 1-1.

A late Perreault penalty made for some tense moments very late in the game, but the Jets penalty kill comes through in the clutch and we head off to overtime for the first time in the series with Winnipeg holding some momentum, having been the better team for pretty much the last 40 minutes of play.

Winnipeg continues it’s strong play into extra time with a couple of good scoring chances before scoring their first ever franchise overtime goal on the fifth shot. Blake Wheeler made a hard charge to the net and after Binnington stopped an initial Scheifele shot, Mark got the rebound and fed a wide open Kyle Connor.

Jets win 2-1 and now this best of seven series is tied 2-2 as it heads back to Winnipeg for game five which will be a 7:30 local time start.
