2019.R1.G2 Jets Playoff Flight Plan: Jets Face Critical Win Situation In Game Two

Every game in the Stanley Cup Playoffs is “must win” when it comes right down to it, but tonight’s game two is extra important. An 0-2 hole going to St. Louis is a situation that the Jets absolutely can not find themselves after tonight’s activities.
Brandon Tanev may or may not be back in the lineup for Jack Roslovic – Best Tanev says he’s ready to go, Paul Maurice has done the whole “I’m still deciding” thing – so we’ll find out closer to game time.

Last Time Between These Two Teams…

Game one saw the Jets come out strong for the first 20 minutes, but St. Louis started to find their game in the second period and the Jets flat out collapsed in the third as the Blues scored twice including a game winning goal in the last three minutes to earn a victory and the opening series lead.

Fun fact…

Dustin Byfuglien is the only player on the Jets roster to score an overtime goal in the Stanley Cup Playoffs and happened nearly a decade ago. Buff as a member of the Chicago Blackhawks scored in Game three of the 2010 Western Conference Final against the San Jose Sharks. The Jets/Thrashers franchise has never won a playoff game in overtime, going 0-2 thus far.

What The Jets Need To Win Game One…

  • 40 minutes of hockey isn’t going to cut it. If they Jets have a lead in the third period again, they may as well convince themselves that the game is tied and that they need to keep attacking.
  • Get Byfuglien back on the top powerplay unit. The Blues are able to cheat to Wheeler on the wall and the middle of the ice to shut down his options because they simply don’t respect the shot Trouba has even if it is a decent shot. All due respect to Jacob, few players in the entire league have a shot that strikes fear liek Big Buff’s does and once you get him back on the ice, the other team has to respect that and spread out.
  • The game is 60 minutes long. Ideally, you play the same kind of attacking hockey in the third as you would in the first. Jets would be wise to follow this idea.
  • Stay out of the box. The penalty kill was pretty good in the first game, but that’s not a fire you should be playing with in the playoffs.
  • PLAY A FULL 60 MINUTES GAWDDAMNIT!

Winnipeg Jet To Watch…

#26 – Blake Wheeler (Right Wing)

If Blake Wheeler can’t get going and do it tonight, this could be a short series.
For as great as Mark Scheifele, Kyle Connor or even Patrik Laine are at scoring goals, Blake Wheeler and his vision along with agility to create offense is absolutely needed to be the spark the offense needs. Coming off a regular season where he for a second straight season set a career high in assists – this season with 71 – Wheeler can dish and lest you think he boosted those numbers with the Jets power play earlier in the season, 39 of his 71 assists came while playing even strength.

What The Blues Need To Win Game Two…

  • Ideally they come out with a better start than they had in game one. The Jets have had tendencies to fade away in games all season, but you also don’t want to be tempting fate by constantly having to come back in games even when you have plenty of time.
  • Give Jordan Binnington a little more support. Offensively of course, but the Blues did get a little loose at times and gave up the middle of the ice a few too many times for comfort. Keep the Jets to the outside areas and you have half the battle won.
  • Stay chill. The Jets have no issues playing a hard, heavy game but they also are prone to taking multiple penalties. The Jets will be physical, but the Blues can’t get into a retaliation game that might cost them man advantages or worse.

St. Louis Blue To Watch…

#57 – David Perron (Left Wing)

David Perron has played for 12 NHL seasons and been a playoff participant in eight of those seasons. That’s maybe not a complete coincidence as a team having depth players such as Perron playing with the middle six forward group are typically deep, well rounded teams that can survive an 82 game grind.
What those teams Perron has been part of haven’t been known for is overly long playoff runs. Perron has seen playoff action with St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Anaheim, St. Louis again, Vegas and now St. Louis for a third stint. In those eight playoff runs, Perron has only been past the first round just three times.
Perron hopes for a third straight playoff push

What They’re Saying…

Toronto Star: Pat Maroon believes grandfather with him in Blues’ Game 1 win over Jets
“He was watching above so obviously that was for him,” Maroon said of his 95-year-old grandfather, who passed away on Tuesday. “It’s been emotional, tough days for me. But being with the guys and having them by my side has been really good.”
Bleedin’ Blue: St. Louis Blues April 11, 2019: Thoughts From The Common Fan
St. Louis has had a bad habit during the season and in recent years of thinking they are better than they are or feeling like things will come easy once they get a taste of success. Do that in this series, or the playoffs in general, and you’ll find yourself down pretty quick.
