<p>On Monday afternoon, the Winnipeg Jets announced the hiring of Dean Chynoweth and Davis Payne as assistant coaches under head coach Scott Arniel.</p>
<p><em>“After a thorough interview process, I feel we’ve found two great individuals to help push our team forward,”</em> said Winnipeg Jets Head Coach Scott Arniel.</p>
<p><em>“Both Dean and Davis bring a great deal of enthusiasm, as well as a tremendous amount of team success and experience in developing both veterans and young players alike. They have excelled particularly in specialty teams with top-10 power plays and penalty killing units. I am excited about what both can offer to our staff and our players.”</em></p>
<p>Payne, 53, was born in Port Alberni, BC. He was drafted in the seventh round, 144th overall, by the Edmonton Oilers in 1989. The left-shot forward played 22 games in the NHL for the Boston Bruins from 1995-96 through 1996-97. He became an assistant for the Greenville Grrrowl the season after retiring as a professional hockey player.</p>
<p>He took on his first head coaching role with the Pee Dee Pride in the ECHL during the 2000-2001 season. He remained in the ECHL as both head coach and assistant until 2007-08 when he became an assistant coach in the AHL with the Peoria Rivermen. The following year, he served as their head coach for two seasons, achieving a record of 62-44-9 before being called up to join the St. Louis Blues in the middle of the 2009-10 season.</p>
<p>He had a full season as the head coach in St. Louis, but just 13 games into his second season (2011-12) with the Blues, he was fired following a 6-7 start, with Ken Hitchcock taking over for Payne.</p>
<p>Payne has worked extensively with forwards and power plays during his NHL coaching career, producing numerous successful players and top-10 power plays along the way. Since then, he has served as an assistant coach for the LA Kings, the Buffalo Sabres, and most recently, the Ottawa Senators. He won a Stanley Cup with the Kings in 2013-14.</p>
<p>Chynoweth, 55, was born in Calgary, Alberta. He played in the WHL with the Medicine Hat Tigers and was drafted 13th overall by the New York Islanders in 1987. While he was a fringe NHL player, he ultimately played 241 games for the Islanders and the Bruins.</p>
<p>Chynoweth began coaching the season after retiring as a player, starting as an assistant coach for the Utah Grizzlies in the IHL. He then secured a head coaching job in the WHL with the Seattle Thunderbirds. After leaving Seattle, he joined the Swift Current Broncos as head coach, guiding them to the playoffs every season during his tenure.</p>
<p>He got his first NHL coaching experience as an assistant with the New York Islanders and later, in the 2012-13 season, became head coach for the Lake Erie Monsters and the San Antonio Rampage in the AHL. Despite his efforts, he failed to reach the postseason in four seasons.</p>
<p>His last WHL stint was with the Vancouver Giants as associate coach in 2017-18, where they lost in the first round. From 2018-19 to 2020-21, he served as an assistant coach for the Carolina Hurricanes, and most recently, he spent the last three seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs.</p>
<p>Chynoweth and Payne will join assistant coaches Wade Flaherty and Marty Johnston, who both return to the Jets coaching staff.</p>
