The Winnipeg Jets are coming off a less than ideal 2-1 loss to the now second last place in the NHL San Jose Sharks. Hows Connor Bedard working for you Blackhawks fans?
The loss to the Sharks was simply due to the fact the Jets failed with their special teams. The Jets would go scoreless on five power plays opportunities.
I will say the Jets power play actually looked good even without Kyle Connor. The puck was being moved effectively and shots were being thrown at Mackenzie Blackwood. But a lot of shots went wide and the puck would find itself back in the neutral zone and the Jets would have to restart.
Nikolaj Ehlers, Gabriel Vilardi, Cole Perfetti, and Josh Morrissey all had 14 shot attempts during the power play while Mark Scheifele had 15 attempts.
The Jets have not scored on the power play in 12 attempts over the last three games and have only scored once in their last 16 power plays.
If you’re thinking maybe the Jets can turn it on against Pierre-Luc Dubois and the LA Kings tonight you are wrong. The Kings have an 88 percent success rate on the penalty kill. The NHL average on the PK is 80 percent.
JETS NATION PRESENTED BY BETWAY
LA has been a great team this season with a 16-5-4 record (36 points) and are third in the Pacific Division just three points back of the best Canadian team the Vancouver Canucks.
The Kings are on a two game losing streak after losing to the the New York teams. Through the month of December they have an impressive record of 3-1-1.
Trevor Moore leads the Kings in goals with 13, Adrian Kempe leads in points with 26. If you would like to take a moment to laugh with me about Dubois numbers since being traded away he has 5 goals and 11 points in 25 games. Everyone take a moment to laugh at Rob Blake and Dubois.
Rick Bowness would confirm the Jets would not be going back to the 11 forwards and seven defencemen format tonight rather going back to the good old 12 forwards and six defencemen.
Dominic Toninato got the emergency recall this morning and will be joining the Jets with Kyle Connor hurt. I would be shocked to see Toninato in the line-up tonight but could get into the line up when the Jets return home on Saturday when they take on the Colorado Avalanche.
The Jets will need to find that secondary scoring tonight and look for the greasy goals as the Kings allow the fewest goals against on average with just 2.32 and the fewest shots against with allowing just 25.9 shots against per game.
Cam Talbot should get the start tonight for LA he is 5-1-1 in his last seven starts and has a .931 save percentage this season that is third best in the NHL for goalies who have started 10 or more games.
Connor Hellebuyck is the expected starter for the Jets tonight he is 7-2-0 in his last nine starts and hasn’t allowed more than three goals against in a game since November 2nd. Overall this season he has 13-6-1 record with a 2.45 goals against and a .915 save percentage.
Projected Lineup:
Ehlers – Scheifele – Vilardi
Perfetti – Namestnikov – Barron
Niederreiter – Lowry – Appleton
Iafallo – Gustafsson – AJF
Morrissey – DeMelo
Dillon – Pionk
Samberg – Schmid
Hellebuyck (.915 SV%)
Brossoit (.903 SV%)
