It’s not always fun living during unprecedented times but watching history being made by the Winnipeg Jets is oh so fun. The Jets would pick up there seventh straight win and remain undefended on the road with their 6-3 victory tonight against the New York Rangers.  The Jets are now historic in their own right by becoming the first team to reach 15 wins in 16 games.
The Jets did have some luck on their side tonight the Rangers would ring the puck off the posts and cross bar several times and they would miss by mere inches on several chances. You gotta be good to be lucky and lucky to be good and the Jets are riding with that.
You look at what happened moments before Mark Scheifele first goal of the night. Vincent Trocheck would ring the puck off the post just 15 seconds into the game, which could have been incredibly deflating to start this three game away trip for the Jets.
Scheifele became the first Jet to score 20 points this season, just 57 seconds into the first period. What a play by Josh Morrissey to not only keep the puck onside but also finds Scheifele mostly alone to find the back of the net.
Will Cuylle would score his fifth of the season on the rebound after Connor Hellebuyck was make the first save from Braden Schneider but with bodies in front of him Hellbuyck wouldn’t find the loose puck and we would have a tied game going into the first intermission.
The Jets and Rangers would trade chances through the first period. Rangers would outshoot the Jets 12-10, both teams would take a penalty but neither would score with the extra man in the first. I did see Dylan Samberg trying his best in front of the Rangers net in the first and that guy might start finding the back of the net soon rather than later.
Gabriel Vilardi would score maybe the nicest goal of his career so far on the power play with Will Cuylle in the box for  holding Kyle Connor.  Neal Pionk gets a lot of credit keeping the puck in the zone and then looking for Nikolaj Ehlers for the pass before Vilardi would knock the puck down and pass to Ehlers who would find Viladri wide open to give the Jets their one power play goal of the night.
The Rangers would strike back on their own power play less than five minutes. First over all draft pick in the 2020 draft Alexis Lafreniere would take advantage of a screened Hellebuyck with a wrist shot from far just above the circles.
Kyle Connor would be third Jet on the top line to score for the team tonight. He would take full advantage of a missed pass by Mika Zibanejad rip all the way down the ice and decieded to shoot the puck and beat Igor Shesterkin. Could would also reach the milestone of 20 points tonight.
Jets were once again out shot by the Rangers this time 16-11. Jets would draw two penalties where New York would only take one.  Connor did give the Jets the lead with a little less than 4 minutes left in the period. The Rangers pushed back but couldn’t find a way to get one passed Hellebuyck before the end of the period.
Scheifele would end up on hat-trick watch early in the third period giving the Jets a two goal lead. What a tip here by the first ever draft pick by the Jets in 2011. This was his ninth goal of the season.
The Rangers would not go down quietly as less than a minute later Kaapo Kakko would score on the back hand.  This is one of those goals where I wish the NHL would go back to the old school rule of you can’t touch the goalie in the crease. Hellebuyck was slashed by Kakko on the play to score. I’m probably wrong on this by any contact on a goalie inside the crease should be a disallowed goal.
Vlad Namestnikov showing off his big brain on this one finding the puck and the going for open net wrap around. It made me smile. This would have gotten so much more love by big sports media if Vilardi didn’t score the goal he did.
Kyle Connor would wrap this game up with an empty netter. Another solid game and Connor Said it in his post game interview ” we’ve won 15 it speaks to leadership that we are not getting comfortable” You haven’t seen this team get comfortable yet but they are confident in who they are.
They are playing like the big dogs that they are and everyone (myself included) treated this team like a bunch of underdogs to start this season. They beat the reighning Presidents Trophy winner handily tonight.  Hellebuyck might have made the case for someone not to pay Shestrekin the 12 million he reportedly wants.
The Jets still have 8 of their next 9 on the road. Next game is against the Tampa Bay Lightning Thursday night at 6:00
