We are so back! This is the 14th season of the Winnipeg Jets and it kicks off on the road tonight in Edmonton when they take on the Oilers Rogers Place at 9:00 PM. The Jets are 7-6-0 in season openers since returning to Winnipeg in 2011.
The St. Louis Blues and the Utah Hockey Club both won their first games of the season. The Jets went 3-2-1 through the preseason and won their final two games against the Calgary Flames.
The opening day roster was also announced today. Logan Stanley is on injured reserve while Ville Heinola is just out with his ankle injury.  It looks like the Jets will be running with three goaltenders this season as well.
Head coach Scott Arniel would confirm that Connor Hellebuyck get the start for the Jets tonight after missing some practice time due to personal matters. Eric Comrie will be the back-up tonight. It looks like the Jets will be running with three goaltenders this season. Comrie and Kaappo Kahkoen will be fighting for the back-up seat on the bench.
The First personal milestone of the year happens tonight as Gabe Viladri will play his 200th game of his career.
Kyle Connor has an active six-game goal streak in season openers. He is tied with Cam Atkinson (2014-15-2019-20), Yvan Cournoyer (1973-74-1978-79) and Mud Bruneteau (1940-41-1945-46) for the longest streak in NHL history.
This is the fourth time a Jets teams has started the season in Edmonton. The Jets were defeated 4-3 in 1985 and tied the Oilers 3-3 in 1990. The Jets 2.0 took down them 5-4 in 2013.
The Jets had a 1-1-1 against Edmonton last season and were outscored 7-9.
The quest for the Jets first Stanley Cup, division championship, and conference championship goes tonight. This team probably isn’t going to nab any of those titles this season. Unless a major retooling of the top six happens. This is a playoff team, no doubt about it. Will they get passed five playoff games this season? Only time will tell.
You can catch tonight’s regular season opening game on Sportsnet, 680 CJOB and Power 97 starting at 9:00 PM from the former city of champions Edmonton.
