The Winnipeg Jets started the season with a bang of a 6-0 shutout victory! Connor Hellebuyck would pick up his 38th career shutout. Kyle Connor would set a new obscure NHL record scoring in 7 straight season opening games. The jets would chase the Edmonton Oilers starting goalie after 31:08.
We called it in the Jetsnation preseason game that Adam Lowry would open the season scoring 14:56 into the first period. He would pick up his own rebound after Nino Niederreiter would make a backhanded pass to him from behind the goal line. Lowry would come right off the bench and found himself in front of the net. Hes a sneaky big man.

The simple game from the third line would continue to shine throughout the first period. Four of the Jets touched the puck starting from below their own goal line. Niederreiter had the chance to either pass to Lowry or Mason Appleton, Appleton was used as an expected weapon.
The Oilers Outshot the Jets in the first 20 minute 9-8. Both teams were able to stay out of the penalty box in the first. I thought the Jets started off a little sluggish, its the first game so it is to be expected but as the third line got rolling so did the whole team. Connor Hellebuyck would start the game a little shaky but found his vezina groove after the Oilers nailed the cross bar.
Rasmus Kupari would score his first goal as a Winnipeg Jet and first goal in 70 games for the 24-year-old. He would work hard to keep the puck away from two oilers and passed the puck around the boards for Morrissey who would pass the puck back to Kupari in the slot where the Jets would find themselves up 3-0. I’m also pretty sure that Kupari is only on pace for 82 goals this season but the sentiment is still the same.

Not more than 20 seconds later Dylan Samberg would find the back of the net being the first defender for the Jets to score this season. Neal Pionk would pass the puck to Lowry who would carry the puck out of the defensive zone through the nutural zone and make a pass to Appleton who quickly found Samberg who had a nice little snap shot to find time.
The Jets third line picked up a total of points with Appleton picking up two apples and a goal.
Haydn Fleury would take a puck up high in the second period and was cut from the shot he left the game briefly but would return and would continue to put his body on the line blocking shots.
At 9:04 Edmonton’s Ty Emberson would take a hooking against Alex Iafallo which would lead to the Jets first powerplay of the game. This is where Connor would score his NHL record of scoring in seven straight season openers. Morrissey would find Connor and he found just the inside of the post to secure the 5-0 lead.
Way better second period from the Jets. Kyle Connor would draw a slashing penalty but no problem for the Jets penalty killers.
The third period was a little sloppy but they started on the penalty kill and they were up 5-0. Nothing to be totally concerned about. The Jets would look amazing on the special teams killing the one penalty and would go 2/3 on the power play. Mark Scheifele would score on the second power play.
The panel on Sportsnet did not have much faith in this Jets team making the post season even thought they had 110 points last season. I think this Jets team has gelled together over the last two seasons and we are going to see a great co-cohesive group going into the 2024-25 season.
It should be noted that Appleton is on pace for 246 points this season while Hellebuyck is on pace for a perfect 82 game season. I think we all need to hold them to those impossible standards.
