After an unreal week Winnipeg Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck was named the NHL’s first star of the week. He was named second star of the week back with week ending October 13, 2024.
This should not have been shocking news for many in Jets nation. Hellebuyck set the new franchise record of longest time between goals against at 191:47 between goals against. Hellebuyck allowed just one goal against in three games this week. He would stop 88 of 89 shots over the three games this past week and pick up two shutout victories.
Helleubyck is the reining Vezina and William M. Jenning trophy winner and leads the NHL with 11 victories in his first 12 games which puts him in an intrest group of goalies including Jack Campbell in 2020-21 with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Carey Price in 2016-17 Montreal Canadiens, Kari Lehtonen in 2011-12 with the Dallas Stars, Martin Gerber in 2007-08 with Ottawa Senators, and Brent Johnson in 2000-01 with the St. Louis Blues.
Hellebuyck was drafted by the Jets in 2012, 130th overall in the fifth round by the Jets and started playing full time with the team in 2016-17. So far this season he is looking like an early Hart trophy contender with a 1.83 goal against average and a .935 save percentage.
Hellebuyck and the rest of the Jets have a tough rest of November playing all but one game on the road and taking on other top teams in the NHL like the New York Rangers, Florida Panthers and the surprisingly good Minnesota Wild.
Colorado Avalanche forward Nathan MacKinnon was named second star and Buffalo Sabres goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen was named third star of the week.
