It wasn’t quite how they drew it up, but salvaging a point after going down 3-0 against the Washington Capitals was a great result. Even though the Jets lost in a shootout, every single point helps the team get closer to the playoff line. It’s going to be another tough game and the Jets need to get off to a better start. We’ve been saying that for weeks, but it’s vitally important against good teams. After the comeback last game, Washington surely won’t let it happen again if they get the lead.
Here’s what to watch for during the second half of the home and home series.

Line mixing

After another rough start on the road, Paul Maurice went to his trusty blender midway through the game. It comes as no surprise as he’s never been one to shy away from mixing things up between the lines.
The top line went back to the classic trio of Connor, Scheifele, and Wheeler who we have seen plenty of over the past few years.
The fourth line also remained the same, but the middle two lines give an interesting look. Copp moves down to play with Harkins and Roslovic while Eakin moves in between Ehlers and Laine. Ehlers and Laine have been used on the same line a ton over the past few years, but none of their results have been very good. It’s perhaps summed up the best by Murat Ates:
Seeing the different combinations throughout the night will definitely be one of the things to watch for in this game. Maybe something will finally click and the Jets will get on the board first.

Defensive injuries

As the season continues the injuries aren’t getting any better as the Jets can’t seem to get healthy. Morrissey went down two games ago and he isn’t even the most recent casualty. During the pregame warmup on Tuesday Sami Niku went down with a lower body injury. That’s the second time during the year that a Jet has been hurt during the gameday warmup. It was a freak accident but it was enough to take Niku out of the lineup as Bitetto drew back in.
As for Morrissey, he’s possible to play tonight, but we will have to wait and see who actually suits up for the game.
Normally a team knows their injuries well before game time, but with Winnipeg’s wacky situations this year the only way to know who’s in the lineup is to see who is actually on the bench when the puck is dropped.
My guess is that the lineup is the same as Tuesday’s contest, but take that with a grain of salt as it’s total guesswork at this point.

Scoring chances

It’s no secret that the Jets have given up prime scoring chances all year long. The Capitals are a really good team and they showed it by the type of chances they created.
As you can see, the Capitals had a ton of chances in and around the crease last game. The Jets only had a fraction of the dangerous chances and that’s one of the main reasons they were chasing the game from the start.
It’s a tough area to fix and something that’s been plaguing the Jets all year. There’s no easy answer, but the dangerous chances will be a major area to watch in this game.

Bold Prediction

After tasting the goals in the third period, the Jets will actually score the opening goal for the first time in weeks. It will be a bumpy ride but they will hold on for a 4-3 victory.
