It was on this day back in 1993, that @Winnipeg Jets legend, Teemu Selanne, set a franchise record for rookie scoring with his 20th goal of the month which came against the @Calgary Flames.
At 10:31 of the first period in what ended up being a 5-4 victory over the Calgary Flames, Teemu Selanne scored a powerplay goal assisted by Phil Housley and Thomas Steen that gave him 20 goals in the month of March, setting a new rookie record for the Winnipeg Jets. The goal was Selanne’s 71st of the season (first of three points on the night) — a mindblowing total to say the least — in what turned out to be a record-setting season for the Finnish sniper that is unlikely to ever be touched.
To put the record into further perspective, Selanne’s rookie season leads second place, Mike Bosse, by 23 goals. In modern NHL history, the closest a rookie has ever come to Selanne was when Alex Ovechkin scored 52 times in 81 games during the 2005-06 season, which is undoubtedly a respectable total but nowhere close to the Finnish Flash.
