As the days inch closer to the NHL’s trade deadline, rumours continue to circulate with the latest linking Winnipeg Jets F Kyle Connor and the Colorado Avalanche.
According to Mike McIntyre of the Winnipeg Free Press, trade rumours between the Winnipeg Jets and Colorado Avalanche “has legs.”
…a specific morsel making the rounds this week, one told to me by a well-connected source who swears “it has legs,” got me thinking of a big-picture type question.
Is there such a thing as an untouchable on the Jets? And, if so, who?
I ask this, because the particular nugget involves Kyle Connor of all players. Yes, that would be the same Kyle Connor who currently leads the Jets with 25 goals and is well on his way, in his third NHL season, to eclipsing his previous season totals of 31 and 34 goals. He’s 23, seemingly getting better every year, and is in the first year of a seven-year, US$50-million deal signed last fall that seems perfectly reasonable by today’s standards. McIntyre noted that he didn’t believe the Jets are, or will be, actively shopping Connor, and that nothing at this stage has gone beyond “usual conversations that happen frequently between team executives but which we rarely hear about, save for a leak.”
In saying that, McIntrye said the main name being linked to Connor is Colorado Avalanche D Bowen Byram. With the Avs already having a franchise defenceman in @Cale Makar on their backend, theoretically, the Colorado club could dangle Byram as a trade option for some top-end offensive talent.
Byram, the Avs fourth-overall pick in last year’s draft, is the type of defenceman the Jets could build around for the foreseeable future and would be a great replacement long-term for the departing @Dustin Byfuglien.
In 36 games with the WHL’s Vancouver Giants, Byram has five goals and another 23 assists.
