The Winnipeg Jets have drafted Swedish defenceman Anton Johannesson 133rd overall in the fifth round.
A small defenceman at 5’9, 154 lbs., Johannesson is lauded for his mobility. Playing in the HV71 organization, Johannesson scored eight goals and 24 points in the J20 SuperElit league last season. Reports say he has dealt with injuries over the last two years limiting his playing time.
This year, he’s set to play in the J20 Nationell league.
Here’s are scouting report on Johannesson:
Johannesson takes advantage of his mobility to open up passing lanes and ruthlessly exploits them. He’s constantly moving his feet, activating off the point, and joining the team’s cycle off the puck. He handles 1-on-1 defending situations really well because of his four-way mobility. – EliteProspects
When he has played, he’s shown he has a tremendous amount of upside. He is a very smart offensive defenseman. He makes simple plays very effectively and makes creative plays look simple. He also has a very good wrist shot. Because they play on the same team and they’re both 5-foot-9, it’s easy to draw comparisons between Johannesson and Andrae. But Andrae’s skating and defensive play are much better at this point, so that is why there is a pretty big gap between them. But at the same time, it’s difficult to say how much Johannesson can improve over the next couple of years if he can just stay healthy. – DobberProspects
