What would you do Wednesday: Replacing TJ Galiardi

In this installment of What Would You Do Wednesday, I want to
see what you, the readers, would do with TJ Galiardi who was placed on waivers
yesterday and can either be claimed by another team, sent to the minors or kept
up in the NHL. Don’t hold back and fight for what you believe in.

THE SCENARIO

TJ Galiardi signed a one-year contract worth $750, 000 with the
Jets on August 1, 2014.  He made the
starting roster for Winnipeg beating out guys like Eric Tangradi, Carl
Klingberg and Eric O’Dell for one of the last spots on the team.
After just one goal in two preseason games, I was surprised with
Galiardi’s inclusion on the opening night roster. I was completely baffled that
he played in Winnipeg’s first game of the season against the Arizona Coyotes. I
thought a guy like Matt Halischuk should have played over Galiardi.
With Evander Kane’s injury in the season opener, Galiardi was
moved up the depth chart and played third line minutes with Adam Lowry and
Dustin Byfuglien/Michael Frolik. After Kane returned from injury, Galiardi was
moved back to the fourth line and shared games with Anthony Peluso, Matt
Halischuk and Chris Thorburn.
Galiardi was held pointless in 17 games with the Jets, was a -4
and had two penalty minutes, but was praised for his defensive play and penalty
killing. In six seasons before this year, Galiardi had 43 goals and 61 assists
in 283 games with the Colorado Avalanche, San Jose Sharks and Calgary Flames.
It’s been reported that Galiardi’s placement on waivers is to
give the Jets the option of calling up a defenceman to play for an injured Toby
Enstrom. But I think there are more options than just bringing up a rearguard.
Options for dealing with Galiardi for Winnipeg could include:
·      Should
Galiardi clear waivers, the Jets could send him down to St. John’s in the AHL,
and call up a forward who could help Winnipeg offensively while playing mistake
free hockey in his own zone. Eric O’Dell and John Albert come to mind, but if
the team wants to bring up a winger, Carl Klingberg might get the call up.
·      Should he
clear waivers, send him to the minors, and call up a defenceman like the team
had intention of doing. But this option is only if Enstrom’s injury is
long-term.
·      If Galiardi
clears waivers, the Jets don’t have to assign him to the minors, they can keep
him up with the club if they choose to.
·      Another
team claims him off waivers and he is no longer Jets property.

HOW IT WORKS

Feel free to lets us
know what you would do if Galiardi cleared waivers. Would you keep him up in
the NHL, or send him down to the minors? Who would you call up in his place?
Why? Why not? You’re the GM, you tell us in What Would You Do Wednesday!
