Two games into the season and we still have no idea what these Jets are going to be like. They played an excellent first game against the Rangers but found themselves on the losing end of the game. Then in game two, they didn’t play particularly well, but managed to score four straight goals to come back and beat the Devils.

With such a stark contract between games, nobody really knows what the identity is going to be for the team this year. With that in mind, let’s focus a few key areas as the Jets take on the Islanders tonight.

The first game against the Rangers featured the top line doing most of the heavy lifting. In game two, the goals came from all over the map. Specifically, two of the four were directly as a result of the second line having a great shift. @Andrew Copp and @Patrik Laine got in on the fore-check and won the puck before making a centering pass to @Matthieu Perreault. Later in the game, the second line had a full two minute shift in the offensive end where they played keep-away until the Devils were completely exhausted. This shift led to @Neal Pionk scoring the tying goal as the Jets had already made a line change while maintaining possession.

The second line is starting to show some really nice signs of chemistry and it shouldn’t be long before they start finding the back of the net.

The Jets seem to have shifted styles this season as they have been trading chances with the opposition rather than sitting back and playing tentative. It’s been suggested for a while now that Winnipeg should focus on a high event style because of their superior skill and shooting talent. Trading chances with the opposition can be dangerous, but the Jets have the right mix of players to pull it off.

Especially with the defense this season, the Jets would do well to try and defend as little as possible. As soon as they get the puck out, they should take some chances and try to gain as many shots as possible, even if it means giving up a few extra on their net as well.

The Jets have historically had an excellent power play, but they’ve only converted one of their seven opportunities so far. An interesting thing to watch will be the Islanders treatment of Patrik Laine. Against the Devils, Laine couldn’t find any open space as he was repeatedly shadowed by a defender to take away the cross-seam pass.

It’s an interesting tactic and the Jets will need to find other ways to score if more teams catch on.

It’s a little bit surprising that @Laurent Brossoit gets placed right back in the net for Winnipeg tonight as confirmed in the morning skate by Paul Maurice. Conventional thinking would have assumed that @Connor Hellebuyck being the team’s number one goalie would have gotten a chance to get back in and ‘right the ship’ as it were after giving up five goals to the New York Rangers on opening night on Thursday. But Brossoit was a little bit better in his turn on Friday and while he gave up four goals himself and posted a sub-.800 save percentage like Hellebuyck, Laurent at least made some big saves late in the game to give the Jets a chance to win.

We’ll see how Brossoit does with a second start in a row – something he didn’t have at all last season – and how Hellebuyck responds to this challenge.
