Welcome back to another edition of Throwback Thursday!
On this day in 1984, the Winnipeg Jets acquired Randy Carlyle from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for a first-round pick in 1984 and future considerations.
The Jets got someone who would become a staple of their team for the next decade, as Carlyle, who was 27 years old at the time of the deal, would spend 10 seasons with Winnipeg before retiring.
Carlyle never found the offensive success he had with Pittsburgh, but continued to be a strong offensive contributor. In Pittsburgh, the defenceman scored 323 points in 397 games, while in Winnipeg he ended up scoring 306 in 564 games.
At the time of the deal, Jets GM John Ferguson said the club made the trade because defenceman Dave Babych would be out for three weeks with a shoulder injury.
“We respect Carlyle’s proven abilities as a defenceman,” said Ferguson.
The first-round pick turned into Doug Bodger, and the futures on the deal later became Moe Mantha. Bodger ended up having a 16 year, 1071 game career posting 528 points — five seasons and 299 games (167 points) were with the Penguins.
Mantha, meanwhile, had played four seasons with the Jets prior to being sent to Pittsburgh and ended up playing with the Pens for four years.
