Throwback Thursday: On this day in 1985, Winnipeg Jets fly by Washington Capitals 5-3

Welcome back to a much-beloved series on the Nation Network: Throwback Thursday. We’ve resurrected this weekly piece from the grave in thanks to a fancy website that allows us to take a look at newspaper archives.

So without further ado…

On this day in 1985, the Winnipeg Jets met the Washington Capitals at the Winnipeg Arena taking down the visiting club 5-3.

And the Jets had none other than C Laurie Boschman to thank for that win, as the Jet put up a one-goal, three-assist performance that included the game-winning tally.

“They really took it to us good,” Capitals head coach Bryan Murray told the Union Press International. “In the early part, our defenceman would grab the puck, turn and make the play. In the second and third, we went back and took a look instead of moving. As a result, they had lots of room in front of our net. We played one period, they played two, and deserved to win.”

Murray summed it up well given his Caps held a nice little 2-0 lead in thanks to first frame tallies from Bob Carpenter and Greg Adams. That night’s game story said the loss didn’t sit well with the Capitals, whose player room was still closed to reporters 30 minutes after the game.

A second-period push from Winnipeg saw Doug Small and Thomas Steen score, before Small, Boschman and Jim Nill all had third-period goals.

All the Jets’ goals, beyond Steen, were from their checking line picking up 10 scoring points. For Boschman, it was a four-point night amid the best scoring season of his NHL career.

The former 9th overall pick of the Leafs in the ’79 draft finished that 84-85 season with 32 goals and 44 assists for a total of 76 points.
