The Nation Notebook: Roster Cuts, St. Louis Injuries, and PTOs.

The Nation Network Notebook is a regular feature that rounds up interesting news, stories, and rumours from around the NHL that don’t quite deserve their own article.
The regular season is just a few days away. Some 2017 draftees, including Nico Hischier and Nolan Patrick, are on track to make their NHL rosters. Jaromir Jagr wants to play in the NHL but still doesn’t have a contract. Players on professional try-outs have to signed or released.
2017 vs 2016 Draft
Last year, only Auston Matthews, Patrik Laine, Matthew Tkachuk, and Jacob Chychrun were full time NHL players. This year might surpass that. Hischier and Patrick are locks to be on their respective NHL teams. Florida’s first round pick Owen Tippett made it’s final 23-man roster. Jesse Puljujarvi was sent to the AHL so Kailer Yamamoto seems like he’ll start the season with Edmonton, although that may be a result of the weak depth at right wing. Filip Chytil, the 21st overall pick in 2017, will start the season with the New York Rangers and Martin Necas is making it hard for Carolina to cut him.
Will Jagr get a Contract?
Jaromir Jagr is still waiting for a contract. Jagr’s 46 points last season with Florida shows he can still play despite his age and speed, but the season opens up in three days and rosters are more or less set at this point.
Will St. Louis sign Jagr? Robby Fabbri is out for the year. Patrik Berglund is hurt until December and Alex Steen will start the season on injury reserve. They’ve signed Scottie Upshall to a one-year contract, but he’s not going to replace the scoring missed from those players.
Jagr can certainly help an NHL team, and his Twitter game is surprisingly strong as well, but so far the NHL’s second all-time scorer remains unsigned.
PTOs
Rosters have to bet set by 5 p.m. ET on October 3rd, so teams either have to sign players on a PTO or release them.
So far, only Jimmy Hayes and Scottie Upshall have received a contract off a tryout. P. A. Parenteau, Jared Cowen, Brooks Laich, Brandon Pirri, Ryan Malone, Harry Zolnierczyk, and Jay McClement have all been released from their tryouts. None of those are really a surprise save for maybe Pirri, but even he didn’t have a good season in New York last year.
Chris Kelly and Ryan White are still in limbo, although White was injured.
