The Winnipeg Jets were the first playoff casualty of the eventual-champion St. Louis Blues this past spring, but despite that setback they’re still in the top third of the opening 2020 Stanley Cup odds at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.
Winnipeg turned in a 99-point campaign this past season on a record of 47-30-5, finishing one point behind the Nashville Predators for the Central Division title. The Jets, though, were dispatched by the Blues in six games in their first-round playoff matchup this spring.
Still, the Jets have been given respectable odds of +1600 (wager $100 to win $1600) on the 2020 Stanley Cup betting lines as the team turns towards its offseason business this week, business which got underway on Monday night with the trading of defenseman Jacob Trouba.
Trouba was set to become a restricted free agent in July, and he was dealt to the New York Rangers in exchange for defenseman Neal Pionk and a first-round pick in this month’s NHL Draft. Trouba had 50 points for the Jets this past season, by far a career high total for the 25-year-old blueliner. Pionk had 26 points for the Rangers last year, his second in the NHL.
The Jets have two key restricted free agents at forward this summer in Patrik Laine and Kyle Connor, with Laine scoring 30 goals and picking up 50 points this past season and Connor good for 34 goals and 66 points, putting him third on the team in scoring behind Blake Wheeler and Mark Scheifele. Both will be looking for rich, long-term contracts this offseason.
Despite the championship, the Blues are still at just +1200 on the 2020 Stanley Cup odds at sportsbooks, with the Tampa Bay Lightning the +800 betting favourite on those opening futures. The Boston Bruins and Vegas Golden Knights are both set at +900 on those NHL odds, with the Toronto Maple Leafs at +1000 to round out the top favourites on the board.
The Jets are tied with the Washington Capitals and San Jose Sharks on those early betting futures, just ahead of the Calgary Flames who sit with +1800 odds heading into the summer.
