This was originally an idea that I had planned to write about a few times throughout the year. Things got busy, but now there’s a bit of time to dive into the idea of hockey cards and collectibles. Hockey cards are something that I started collecting from a young age. My brother and I both loved getting cards from any place we could find them. This meant scouring garage sales for the best deals or going to McDonald’s for their yearly cards. Recently, card collecting has become a slightly larger hobby for myself and although my collection isn’t as impressive as some others, it’s tons of fun to see the various cards and unique inserts.
This will likely turn into a few different posts about collecting, cards, and other memorabilia items as some free time has opened up without hockey on the TV. For this first part, we at Jetsnation want to see your most prized hockey card. Maybe it’s a unique insert from a current Jets star like Laine or Scheifele. Perhaps you’re a Jets 1.0 fan and have a prized Selanne or Hawerchuk card.
The unique part about card collecting is that you can do it exactly how you want. Any card can be collected and any collection can have certain teams, favourite players, maybe cards from a specific year. There are no rules when it comes to collecting which means you can do it exactly the way you want.
For my personal collection, I collect all Jets 2.0 with a specific focus on Josh Morrissey. Two of my other favourite players to collect are Peter Forsberg and Joe Sakic. Sakic has always been one of my favourite players so it’s lots of fun to collect some of his old cards.
As for my favourite cards, I recently got a great opportunity to go to the Jets Hall of Fame Luncheon where both Randy Carlyle and Thomas Steen were signing autographs. I was able to get a card signed from each player and those are two of my favourite cards right now.
One of my other favourite cards is a Joe Sakic patch card. A patch (or swatch) card means that the card contains a small piece of the player’s jersey. These are often rare cards and come sometimes be quite valuable.
The thing I really like about this card is the fact that it’s numbered. In the bottom right corner it has a 56/75. This means there are only 75 copies of this card and each one is uniquely identified, similar to a serial number. Having cards that are numbered are also unique and can be quite valuable. Some cards have far fewer copies with some even being the sole card in existence.
Those are some of my favourite cards, but as mentioned before, what are your favourite cards? Send us a pic on social media with your favourite items and we might feature them in our next post. In the future, we will look at some basics of card collecting including brands, sets, inserts, and other details. Of course, these will focus on the Jets like which players are in which set and how to collect your favourite players to watch.
It’s going to be a fun little foray into the world of collecting, so let’s have some fun digging through our old boxes of collectibles and show us what you’ve got.
