The Winnipeg Jets begin a three-game home stretch against a fellow division leader that has an overwhelming OVER trend in the second leg of back-to-back games, but whether they can take advantage of that open offensive environment and get the win remains to be seen.
The Jets opened as -125 home favorites (bet $125 to win $100) on the NHL odds for Tuesday night at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com with the San Jose Sharks coming back at even money and a 6.5-goal total. The Jets’ track record with such tight moneylines at home is mixed, as they are 10-8 in their last 18 regular-season home games as a favorite of 100 to -135. The Sharks, 3-0 victors against the Minnesota Wild on Monday, are 5-2 in their last seven games when they also played the previous day.
Winnipeg leads the season series 2-1, with the away team having won each game. In their most recent meeting on February 5, the Sharks won 3-2 in overtime.
The total has gone OVER in eight of the Sharks’ last nine games when they were playing for the second day in a row. The total has also gone OVER in five of the Jets’ last eight home games, according to the OddsShark NHL Database.
Those trends might be conducive to Winnipeg getting untracked after it had little to show for its effort during a 3-1 road loss against the Washington Capitals on Sunday, where fourth-liner Mathieu Perreault scored their lone goal. Center Mark Scheifele, for one, is looking to end a three-game point drought. The last time the Jets hosted the Sharks on February 5, Scheifele shared the team lead with four shots on goal but did not earn a point, and things have a way of evening out in the NHL.
The Jets have the league’s fifth-best offense at 3.4 goals per game, but the Sharks rank third with an average of 3.6. Despite going 0-for-5 in the Washington game, the Jets power play also ranks fifth in the league at 25.1 percent, a smidge behind the Sharks power play, which ranks fourth at 25.4 percent. The Jets have the 24th-ranked penalty kill (78.8 percent) and the Sharks are 10th (81.0 percent) on the PK.
Each team holds a one-point lead in its division. The Jets, who have 84 points, hold two games in hand on the second-place Nashville Predators in the Central Division. They host two more quality teams this week with the Boston Bruins in town on Thursday before the Calgary Flames come in on Saturday. The Sharks, who just pulled ahead of the Flames for top spot in the Pacific Division, return home after this contest for a three-game homestand that begins against the Florida Panthers on Thursday.
