Report: Winnipeg Jets re-assign 11 players

The Jets website announced that the Winnipeg Jets have re-assigned eleven players from training camp.

The eleven cut brings down the Jets training camp roster from 55 to 44 (43 after excluding Grant Clitsome). Eight of the players move from the NHL to the AHL, while three were sent back to their Canadian major junior team.

All three of the Jets’ 2015 NHL Entry Draft selections were sent back to the Western Hockey League. Jansen Harkins will go back to Prince George where he will continue to play as their top line centre. Matteo Gennaro will return to Prince Albert where Gennero played as a bottom-six forward last season and will be making a push for the top-six. Michael Spacek will start his rookie season for the Memorial hosting Red Deer Rebels.

The Manitoba Moose will begin their training camp.

The Jets sent down former collegiate defenders Peter Stoykewych, Brennen Serville, and Aaron Harstad, plus goaltender Jussi Olkinuora, all of whom were on AHL contracts. Stoykewych, Serville, and Harstad will take part of their very first AHL training camp, while Olkinuora has been a part of the Jets’ AHL organization for two previous seasons.

The Jets also sent down the gritty winger Austen Brassard who will be in his third AHL season. Rookie forwards Jimmy Lodge and Axel Blomqvist will be taking part of their first AHL training camps and will be looked to add some secondary offense to a squad that was devoid of it last year.

Along with the cuts is AHL journeyman goaltender David Leggio. Leggio has been an average AHL starter and likely brought in as insurance and internal competition for the Moose.

The Jets camp has been cut down to 24 forwards, 15 defenders, and 4 goaltenders.
