According to TSN’s Darren Dreger, the NHL intends to follow up to ensure the Jets followed the league’s proper concussion protocol following a incident with Dustin Byfuglien in Tuesday’s loss to the Penguins.
Byfuglien collided with the 6′ 7″, 255 lbs Jamie Oleksiak during the second period. He was noticeably wobbly following the collision and and struggled to get to his his feet. Byfuglien eventually needed help from teammates to get back to the bench. .
Byfuglien was then pulled from the game to go through the NHL’s concussion protocol. He passed testing and returned to the later in the period, logging a total of 22:03 of ice time on the night.
Head coach Paul Maurice talked to reporters on Wednesday about the process.
“There’s spotters in the building, on our bench and in the league office. They run a protocol and he either passes or fails a baseline test. If he passes it and feels good, he can come back. There’s room for the player to say I passed my test, but I don’t feel good about it. He [Byfuglien] felt good.”
Byfuglien was not on the ice for practice on Wednesday, but Maurice said everything seemed fine.
“Just kept him [out of practice], a little precaution for us. He felt fine. He’s also been dealing with the flu going back a few days, so we’ve got a few guys that are fighting through it.”
Through 21 games this season, the veteran blueliner has amassed two goals and 17 points.
The Jets return to action on Thursday against the Blackhawks.
