Patrik Laine is on a different level.
The Finnish sensation scored five goals on five shots Saturday evening against the St. Louis Blues. Simply insane.
He’s the first 20-year-old to score five goals in a game since Wayne Gretzky did it twice in 1981. It was also the first five-goal game in the NHL since Johan Franzen of the Detroit Red Wings in 2011.
Here’s a look at his five goals:
After already potting four goals, it’s pretty crazy he was left this wide-open on his fifth goal:
The five-goal outburst comes after he scored twice and fired six shots on goal in a loss to the Flames on Wednesday. The youngster is red-hot right now, having found the back of the net 11 times in the last four games after a modest three-game goal drought.
He’s been excellent against the Blues in his career, scoring seven times in 11 games in St. Louis.
With those five-goals, Laine now leads the NHL with 19 goals on the season. He’s the 14th different player in NHL history and sixth in the League’s modern era (1943-44) to score at least three hat tricks through his team’s opening 22 games of a season.
It was also a memorable night for Christopher Haley. According to TSN’s Frank Seravalli, Laine’s five goals have won Haley $1 million in the Safeway/Sobeys Score and Win contest. He’ll get $50,000 per year for 20 years.
What a special evening for one of the best young players in the game.
