Brendan Lemieux has been handed a two-game suspension for an illegal hit to the head of Florida Panthers’ forward Vincent Trocheck.
The incident occurred during the second period of Florida’s 4-2 win over Winnipeg in Finland on Friday. The Panthers and Jets split the two-game series in Helsinki.
Lemieux was assessed a match penalty on the play and dropped the gloves with Florida’s MacKenzie Weegar, who took exception to the hit on his teammate.
Lemieux had a hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety on Monday.
It seemed pretty apparent Lemieux was going to receive supplemental discipline for the hit. It was a clear-cut hit to the head and Lemieux had to answer for it immediately afterwards.
The 22-year-old son of former NHLer Claude Lemieux is pointless through nine games this season and has racked up 27 PIM. He made his NHL debut last season, notching one goal in nine appearances.
Lemieux will forfeit US $9,023.30 in salary and will be eligible to return when the Jets host the Washington Capitals on Nov. 14.
