Report: Jets Sign Alex Burmistrov to a two-year contract

Burmi will once again play in the NHL!

The Winnipeg Jets have announced the re-signing of the young forward Alexander Burmistrov to a two-year deal. The Jets did not announce AAV though, which is unusual for the Jets. This has lead to some speculation on whether or not it is a sign-and-trade.

Burmistrov, 23, will fill in nicely for the Jets top-nine unit and will diminish some of the pain in losing Michael Frolik. While some are assuming Burmistrov will play as a centre, the young forward has a lot of NHL experience on the wing, and Paul Maurice has discussed his preference on having multiple centres on the team playing wing for flexibility.

While only 19 and 20, Burmistrov posted exceptional underlying numbers despite not being the most efficient scorer. Using statistical cohorts, our best estimates is that Burmistrov will provide strong two-way results while scoring about average for a middle-six forward.

The two-year contract AAV is likely low, as Burmistrov’s time in the KHL creates an unknown factor on how he has developed, although the NHL equivalent points per game suggest some improvement.
