Blocking shots, scoring goals, and… possibly having rocket boots as a superpower? Twenty seven year old Brandon Tanev may not be breaking any NHL milestones despite having a career year, but with a looming UFA status and the Jets up against the cap as they are, has he played himself right out of Winnipeg with that career year?

PLAYER’S SEASON IN REVIEW

Tanev started out the year with a bang after receiving a boarding major and game misconduct from boarding St. Louis Blues player Ryan O’Reilly, he received no supplemental discipline from the league but it was clear from the beginning of the season that Tanev was ready to go full force, and he did.  The 2018-2019 season was a career year for Tanev who more than doubled his goals and points from previous years, and was one of the most reliable players on the ice this year. This season saw Tanev as one third of the TLC line along with Adam Lowry and Andrew Copp, which not only was a fan favorite but was also the fourth most productive fourth line this season. The left winger capped his season off with an injury that caused him to miss the last two games with a broken finger that required surgery.

The start of the playoffs for Tanev were filled with uncertainty, he had been listed as day-to-day initially but the organization hinted that he would be back at some point for the first series. In the postseason media availability it was announced that Tanev had to have surgery on his finger, while it would have healed by itself surgery was the best option in order to have a chance at making it back in time for the series at all. Tanev missed the first game but returned for the second. Despite being scoreless in his first game back, he came up big in the third match of the series by scoring a goal that would end up being the game winning goal.

WHAT WE SAID A YEAR AGO

Tanev’s future looked murky at the start of the season after signing a one year extension last summer. With his strong regular season and recent playoff surge he has certainly earned another contract from the Jets. Tanev will most likely sign a modest 2-3 year deal around the $1-1.5 million mark and will continue to be a valuable contributor in the bottom six.

FUTURE OUTLOOK

The sky’s the limit for Brandon Tanev, unfortunately that sky may not be in Winnipeg.  It’s been said numerous times that he could have very well played himself out of a contract in Winnipeg with the solid year he’s had. If Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff manages to find a price that will work for both Tanev and fit Winnipeg’s tight cap space, expect to see Tanev continuing to play third or fourth line but has proven capable of playing up in the second line when injury strikes.

FINAL GRADE:  B
