Saying Michael Spacek has carried out a strong start in his rookie WHL season would be an understatement. The Red Deer Rebels have scored seven goals over two games, and Spacek picked up a point on five of them.
The young offensive prospect produced three goals and two assists in two games, while being awarded first and second star respectively. One could even argue that Spacek deserved first star in both games.
His celebration after scoring the game winning goal in overtime may have pushed some buttons.
We’ll show you what we mean.
The Red Deer Rebels were visiting the Edmonton Oil Kings.
The Rebels opened the scoring early in the second off of a power play goal, where Spacek picked up the primary assists. The Oil Kings responded about three minutes later, and then pushed one ahead about halfway in the third.
With 21 seconds remaining, the Rebels tied it up, scoring another power play goal and Spacek picking up the secondary assist.
About 30 seconds in overtime, the Rebels came streaking in on a two-on-one situation. Then following happened:
We’re pretty excited over Michael Spacek here at Jets Nation. He may only been a fourth round pick, but he has some exceptional talent for where he was drafted.
The 5’11 winger was the highest under-18 point scorer in the Czech men’s professional league over the last decade, scoring more than former Jets Jiri Tlusty and Micheal Frolik.
His exceptional numbers in his draft-eligible season were strong enough to produce a Player Cohort Success rating of 33%, meaning 33% of players of similar age, height, and scoring to Spacek made their way into the NHL for at least 200 games.
Jets Nation, and their sister sites Canucks Army and NHL Numbers, went as far as calling Spacek a late-first-to-early-second round talent, ranking him 25th overall. We even ranked him 11th overall in the Jets Nation’s Top 20 Prospects Profiles.
It’s only been two games, but the early returns have been pretty for the young and dynamic Czech winger.
