Just Who Is Bogdan Kiselevich?

5 years agoShortly after the trade deadline today, the Winnipeg Jets announced a litany of tinkering trades. These came after the announcement of Kevin Hayes and included Matt Hendricks, Par Lindholm, Nathan Beaulieu and Bogdan Kiselevich. I, like many Jets fans were left wondering just who Bogdan Kiselevich was aside from the obvious answer of being a defenseman from the Florida Panthers.
Kiselevich played with several teams in Russia for the KHL and most notably he was a part of the team of Olympic Athletes from Russia that competed in the 2018 Winter Olympics. In Pyeongchang, the 28 year old defenseman earned himself two assists in six games played and of course a gold medal. Additionally he’s spent 9 seasons playing with Severstal Cherepovets, was lauded as one of Cherepovet’s best young defenseman and named assistant captain before being traded to CSKA Moscow in 2014, spending four seasons with them.

Kiselevich came over to the NHL this season, signing a two-way contract with the Florida Panthers. While he has only seen 32 games with them he seems to have done alright and seems to have been more of an insurance guy for Florida, and we should anticipate the same for the Jets especially since they are down two defenseman with Dustin Byfuglien and now Josh Morrissey out for an undetermined amount of time.
Kiselevich has marked 8 assists since joining the NHL with an average time on ice just shy of fifteen minutes. He’s a stay at home defenseman who’s known for his ability to get pucks out of the zone effectively, he’s not afraid to dish out the hits and is likely going to give Brandon Tanev a run for his money when it comes to blocking shots with 51 blocks throughout 44 games in the KHL last year.
Realistically, this is a trade that has all the reward and none of the risk that associated with a 7th round pick, and for a remaining cap hit of just over $200,000 that is waiver exempt and easily buried in the AHL if necessary, this seems like a good opportunity for both Kiselevich to show what he can do for Winnipeg and for the Jets to shore up some additional relief for its injured defensive line.
