If you like goals, that was the game for you! It was an good old fashioned Duck hunt as the Jets came out flying with a franchise record six goals in the first period. They couldn’t do anything wrong as they chased Gibson from the net late in the first period. They continued their strong play for the rest of the game despite a solid push-back from the Ducks in the second period. Jack Roslovic finished the game with his first career hat-trick as he scored three goals all on the power play. Hellebuyck wasn’t at his best this game but it didn’t matter as the game was so lopsided from the very beginning.

First Period

Hoo-boy. That was some kind of period for the Jets. There’s no doubt that this is the best period of hockey they have played all season. They came out swinging early as the fourth line opened the scoring after Copp located a rebound in the slot.
They kept it rolling shortly after as Trouba gave Roslovic an absolutely gorgeous stretch pass on the power play. Roslovic came in on the breakaway and fired home a goal to give the Jets a 2-0 lead.
Not to be out-done, the top line went to work shortly after and played perhaps their best shift of the season. It was an entire shift with sustained offensive zone pressure with great puck movement and pinches. The end result was another goal as Wheeler tucked home his 10th goal of the year.
With the Jets all over the Ducks, they tried to get something going as multiple Ducks jumped into the rush to try and score a goal. It back-fired on them as Little took it the other way and scored on a nice two on one with Kulikov.
After some rough stuff with Little behind the net, the Jets were off to their second powerplay of the game. It was Roslovic again who capitalized and scored his second of the game. Perreault gave a wonderful pass through the centre of the ice to a streaking Roslovic.
As if five goals weren’t enough, the Jets decided to score a sixth goal in the opening frame. The fourth line struck again after some great work in the offensive end. Lemieux took the puck hard around the net and scored on a wraparound.
Gibson was terrible in the first period allowing six goals, but the entire Anaheim roster looked terrible as they allowed far too many chances in front of the net. For some reason, they decided to leave Gibson in for all six goals before pulling him late in the first period. The Jets could do nothing wrong in the first and the best summary was done by Sara Orlesky.

Second Period

I think everyone expected some push-back from the Ducks in the second period. They came out strong and scored in the opening minutes with a nice shot that beat Hellebuyck under the blocker.
The Ducks kept the momentum as the period went along as they controlled majority of the shots and possession. They were able to score their second of the game after Kulikov lost the puck in the offensive zone. The Ducks took it the other way and scored on a partial breakaway with a nice chip shot over Hellebuyck’s arm.
Although the score wasn’t close, the two quick goals caused a bit of concern as the Jets were clearly getting out-played. Enter the fourth line who flipped the script and scored another goal. It was Appleton who made a great pass across the crease to Myers who jumped in the rush. This was a great response by the fourth line after the Jets weren’t getting many chances in the second period.
The period ended with the Jets going to another powerplay. With the top unit not finding the back of the net, Maurice chose to start the second unit instead. This move paid off as Roslovic was able to convert once again. This goal gave Roslovic his first career hat-trick, a great accomplishment for the speedy winger.
The period ended with the Jets up by six goals once again, this time leading 8-2.

Third Period

Well, we haven’t seen enough goals yet this game so the Jets decided to make it 9-2 with a beautiful tip in front of the net. Little scored his second of the game on a point shot that came from Ben Chiarot.
Things settled down after Little’s second goal of the game as both teams traded chances but were unable to convert. The Ducks added a late goal with a tip in front of Hellebuyck.
The fans were chanting ‘we want ten’ during the third period but they had to settle with nine goals as the Jets couldn’t muster a tenth goal in the final minutes. Overall, it was a fantastic game for Winnipeg as everything they touched seemed to go in.

Talking Points

It was a historic night in Winnipeg as the Jets set a new franchise record for goals in a period with six in the opening frame.
It was also a historic night for Jack Roslovic who scored his first career hat-trick. Interesting to note is that all three of his goals were scored on the powerplay. Nevertheless, it was a great game from Roslovic who has been on a tear since the All-Star break.
The fourth line for Winnipeg had a great game. They were able to generate consistent offense with great forechecking and puck movement in the offensive end. They were rewarded with a few goals tonight for their efforts.
