JNGD.S8.G36 Flight Plan: Christmas with the Canucks
By KB
5 years ago‘Twas the last game before Christmas and all throughout Canada, every fan was quite glad, as their teams weren’t bad.
Actually, Vancouver and Ottawa fans were not glad because they are currently the only Canadian teams outside the playoff picture. The Canucks are close at least and a win would allow them to surpass the Oilers for the second wildcard spot. This meeting marks the third, and final, game between the Jets and Canucks this season. The Jets have the opportunity to sweep the season series as they already beat the Canucks back on October 18 and also on November 19, led by a Laine hat-trick.

Canucks Player To Watch
#40 Elias Pettersson – Centre
Pettersson has been sensational for the Canucks during his rookie year. After being the 5th overall pick two seasons ago, he’s been better than advertised as he leads the Canucks in goals, assists, and points. In his only game against Winnipeg, he blasted a power play goal past Hellebuyck. As the most dangerous Canuck, he’s the type of player that can single-handedly change a game and he will be the one to watch in this one.

Last Canucks Game
The Canucks got off to a rough start as they were severely out-shot in the first period. Markstrom stood tall and bought enough time as the Canucks were able to strike first in the second period. They never looked back as they scored another two goals to go up 3-0.By the time St. Louis scored, it was too late as the Canucks added an insurance marker as well as an empty net goal to seal the deal.

Canucks Notes
- From our good friends at Canucksarmy: Chris Tanev and Alex Edler: What do you do?
- Also from Canucksarmy: “The Canucks were dealt some tough news prior to puck drop against the Lightning this evening as it was released that defenceman Olli Juolevi would be out for the remainder of the season”
- The Canucks are playing their final game before the holidays, but it’s their first of three in a row against the western Canadian teams. They come back after the break with a trip to Edmonton and Calgary.
Jets Player To Watch
#27 Patrik Laine – Right Wing
Patrik Laine is the player to watch as he’s scored four goals in the two games against the Canucks this season. After scoring one goal in the first game they played, he followed that up with a hat trick during his ridiculous month of November. In his career, Laine has seven goals in seven games against the Canucks which is the third most goals he’s scored against any team in the league.

Last Jets Game
It was a crazy night in California as the Jets and Sharks played a fun back and forth game. It began with a Byfuglien breakaway in the first minute of the game. He stripped Burns and raced the length of the ice to put the Jets up by one. The lead was short lived as Kane answered right back to tie the game. With each team scoring two more times, it was deadlocked at three until late in the third period. It was Ehlers who scored the game winning goal on a great passing play that fooled Jones and made him slide the wrong way out of his crease. Ehlers also added the empty net goal and completed his second hat-trick of the season.

Jets Notes
- In a weird schedule quirk, the Jets, just like the Canucks, play the Flames and Oilers in the week after returning. The Jets at least get to stay home as Calgary and Minnesota come to visit before they head out and play the Oilers in Edmonton.
- Nerves are running a bit higher in Winnipeg as the Jets have struggled this week compared with their recent play. After winning four in a row last week, the Jets squeaked out a win against the Lightning in an overtime thriller. After that, it was a tough loss to the Kings followed by a game they likely shouldn’t have won against the Sharks. Even with the recent bumps in the road, a win against the Canucks would ensure the Jets keep first place in the West heading into the Christmas break.
- Despite the rocky parts of the San Jose game, there were two noteworthy occurrences. Ehlers scored his fourth career hat trick and Appleton scored his first career NHL goal off a nice cross-ice pass from Petan.
