The Winnipeg Jets are up against the Minnesota Wild in what will be a rematch of last year’s first playoff round. It’s also American Thanksgiving this weekend which means a 3:00 pm start time on a weekday. Although, maybe you’ve taken the day off work to get some Black Friday deals, in which case, you can enjoy some great hockey as the Jets and Wild go head to head.

Jets Notebook

  • The Jets are coming off a terrible loss to Calgary where they gave up five goals in the first period. It was a poor defensive effort in the first period and Hellebuyck got pulled after letting in three goals. Brossoit didn’t fare much better as he let in two goals as well. The defensive game needs to be much better if the Jets want to compete against the Wild.
  • Connor Hellebuyck didn’t look very sharp against the Wild even though he didn’t get much help from the guys in front of him. Regardless, all eyes will be on Hellebuyck as he’s looking for a bounce back performance.
  • Patrik Laine’s hot streak continued in Calgary as he scored another two goals. With five goals in his last two games he has climbed the ranks of league scoring extremely fast going from nearly 50th in the league to the top ten.
  • This is game one of a back to back set where the Jets will fly to St. Louis right after the game. It’s always tough to play two days in a row, especially with travel, but the Jets will be able rest afterwards as they get two days off before they host Pittsburgh on Tuesday night.

Wild Notebook

  • The Wild get to enjoy Thanksgiving at home as they are in the middle of a three game homestand. They hosted Ottawa on Tuesday, and they don’t play again until next Tuesday when they finish their homestand against the Arizona Coyotes.
  • One of the surprises in the Central Division is how good the Wild have been. Many people expected them to regress given the age and state of their roster. They are proving the doubters wrong as they are second in the Central Division and playing some great hockey.
  • The defensive core for Minnesota has been exceptional to start the season. Suter, Dumba, and Spurgeon all have over 10 points which mean they are all in the top 30 for points among defensmen. Matt Dumba in particular has been outstanding as he is leading all defensemen with 10 goals.
  • The special teams battle will be intriguing to watch as the Jets have the second best powerplay in the league while the Wild have the third best penalty kill. This will be an interesting game within a game as both teams are hoping to come out on top.
