Jets Trade Deadline 2016: D-Day Rumor Roundup

This week, we at Jets Nation hope to provide you with some of the best (and free) in-depth coverage of the Winnipeg Jets as the trade deadline date fast approaches us. We’ll take a look at what the Jets have done, could do, and should do, with all the reasoning why and why not.

It’s d-day today, deadline day for any trades, and we will look at what may be leftover for the Jets.

There has been a lot of talk that the Jets could be done for the most part done with their movements. The obvious exception is if they are offered a deal that they feel they cannot give up and puts the Jets in a better place for their competitive window.

We could see some movement from the Jets for minor plays, and not just meaning minor league players exclusively. That said the Jets made their big move with moving captain Andrew Ladd to the Chicago Blackhawks and receiving a first round pick, a conditional third, and young-prospect Marko Dano.

Whenever the Jets have been mentioned, it has been around players who are either a young roster player or someone on the cusp of making the NHL. If the Jets are making any moves today, they are probably looking at players along the lines of Joel Armia or Marko Dano.

There have been a few names tossed around that the Jets have looked at. Many of them pending RFAs like Shane Prince, Patrick Wiercioch, and Brandon Pirri.

Earlier this season we found out that Hamonic requested a trade to move closer to home, out west. His preference is Winnipeg although there have been reports he would move to teams near by.

The New York Islanders though will be patient and likely wait out until near the draft, especially as they sit third in the Metropolitan Division and look to make some noise in the playoffs.

The Jets were reported as one of five teams to “have done more than kick tires” in trying to gain the young blue-chip winger prospect Jonathan Drouin.

The Tampa Bay Lightning are looking for a young defensive player who could move into their roster instantly and help the team push deep into the playoffs this year. If the Jets are to give into these requests we would likely be looking at a Drouin package being swapped for a Jets’ package including Jacob Trouba.

It would be hard giving up on a top right-hand shot defender like Jacob Trouba. He already is performing like a fringe first-pair defenseman at only 22-years-old. Still, a young, potentially elite, player like Drouin might be one that could push the Jets.
