The Winnipeg Jets have signed Jansen Harkins to a new two-year contract with an average annual value of $725,000.
Another RFA is off the board with Harkins under contract for the next two seasons. The salary is based on the league minimum over the next two years which is 700k this year and 750k next year. The most important part of this contract for Harkins is that it’s a one-way deal. A one-way contract means that Harkins will get paid the same salary whether he plays in the AHL or the NHL. Getting a one-way contract is a big deal for Harkins because it likely means he’s now a full-time roster player. He might be a pressbox player at some points during the next two years, but the nature of the contract makes it seem that the Jets have him in their future plans.
Harkins is coming off his first season with NHL experience after spending the last three years with the Moose. He played 29 games and notched two goals along with five assists. Harkins is known for his work ethic and ability to win battles in the bottom six but there is some offense to his game after having more than a point per game in his partial year with the Moose last season.
He showcased that offense in the playoffs with a breakaway and a gorgeous shot against Calgary.

Harkins will likely start the year on the fourth line and try to provide some energy in the bottom six. The fourth line has struggled in the past few years and Harkins is hoping to get the bottom six back on track. One thing that is unclear is the long-term potential of Harkins. If he has a productive two years, he might find a home in a third-line role for years to come but for now, he can just enjoy his new contract.
