The WHL and overseas playoffs are underway, NCAA prospects are eliminated, and the Moose struggle again this week.

CHL

Jansen Harkins scored his first of the playoffs in the series opener on Friday night. The goal pulled the Cougars to within one early in the 3rd period, but the tying goal never came as Portland put the game away with an empty net goal in the last minute. The Cougars rebounded to tie the series on Sunday in a 5-1 win. Harkins had six penalty minutes. Game Three takes place in Portland tomorrow night.

Matteo Gennaro was held scoreless in the first two games of the series against the Regina Pats, as the Calgary Hitmen are down 2-0 in the series. Watching the first game, Gennaro’s line was regularly overpowered and hemmed in their zone by Sam Steel’s line. Game Three will take place in Calgary tonight.
Jordy Stallard‘s season may be long over due to injury, but enjoy a shift-by-shift look at Stallard from his second-last game of the season in Edmonton.

Michael Spacek had a goal and an assist in each of the first two playoff games against Lethbridge. Red Deer won Game One 4-2 and Spacek was named first star. Down 2-0 in the game, Spacek stripped Jordy Bellerive of the puck and scored a highlight reel goal, much to the chagrin of the Lethbridge commentators. Spacek scored and assisted on the only goals in Game Two, losing 5-2. The series moves to Red Deer tomorrow night.

Luke Green signed an ATO (Amateur Try-Out) with the Manitoba Moose, and will look to get into games this week. Green did not play in either of the two games following the signing, as coach Pascal Vincent said he is not 100%.

NCAA

Mikhail Berdin played back-to-back games this weekend, stopping an impressive 42 of 44 (and all three shootout attempts) in a shootout win on Friday. The following night, Sioux Falls made the five hour road trip to Kearney to play the Tri-City Storm. Berdin stopped 28 of 32 shots in a 5-3 loss. Below is a look at Berdin from a game against the Omaha Lancers on March 10th, showing every time Berdin touched the puck.

NCAA

CJ Franklin will be returning to MSU for his senior season, as previously reported.
It was looking likely that Tucker Poolman would sign with the Jets following UND’s exit from the NCAA Tournament, but plans have been put on hold due to Poolman’s shoulder injury. Gary Lawless reports that Poolman’s camp states their intent is still to sign with the Jets.
Erik Foley and Providence were shut out 3-0 by Harvard in the East Regional of the NCAA Tournament. Foley recorded 7 (!) of the Friars’ 41 shots on goal. Future plans for Foley are unknown at this time.
Mason Appleton and Matt Ustaski are likely to return to school next season.
Jack Glover and the Gophers were eliminated by Notre Dame on Saturday in the Northeast Regional, losing 3-2 on a third period goal by Bruins pick Anders Bjork.

Overseas

Pavel Kraskovsky scored his first point of the series against SKA yesterday, and did it in style. The goal held up for a long time, as Lokomotiv held a 1-0 lead until the 3rd period. Lokomotiv’s coach decided to throw debris onto the ice for a bench minor, allowing SKA to tie the game with about 10 minutes left. They’d go on to win in OT and SKA now have a 3-0 stranglehold on the series.
Sami Niku got on the score sheet for the first time in the playoffs, assisting on the first goal of the game. JYP would go on to win the game 3-1 and tie the series at two games apiece.

Jacob Cederholm played two more playoff games with the under-20 HV71 team and reached the semifinals, taking out Frölunda. The semifinal round will begin on April 1st.

AHL

The Manitoba Moose lost a pair of games at home against the Milwaukee Admirals this week. Eric Comrie was pulled in the 2nd period after allowing two goals in 20 seconds, and five goals on 16 shots.  Jamie Phillips stopped 15 of 15 in relief before the Moose surrendered an empty netter. Down 2-0 in the first, Kyle Connor scored on a nice backhander in the slot to cut the score in half.

Jamie Phillips got the nod in the second game, but managed to stop just 12 of 15 shots faced. The Moose lost 3-1 in the spirited affair, which saw six fighting majors between the teams.
